Anyone clean their tips on the carpet before putting it back in the case?

Well I do and I want to stop doing this. While it comes off I don't want to do it because I feel bad. Quick swipe with alcohol naps? Damp napkin?

I do not. I put my shafts in my case tip up and dont really care if things don’t stay pristine. I have a CF shaft so it’ll clean up with alcohol wipes. And I’m not chasing the equipment dragon. Not looking to profit off of cues. It’s okay if mine gets some wear and tear. Had the same butt for 9 years now and might use it for the rest of my life. That’s part of it being mine. I don’t expect to get it down to the level of “Trigger” (Willy Nelson’s famous guitar) but there is a good analogy there that sings to me.

Unchalking is real. I've done the carpet thing. Then came only bars - tile, concrete, not even sawdust, and the blue dot in the middle of my palm. Good case for a tip cover.

It has always seemed odd to me although some people I highly respect do it. Think of what is in that carpet and on it. Why in the world would I want to put that stuff on my tip? I usually have some damp paper around. Failing that I sit down and flip my blue jeans cuff up and clean the tip on the inside of my jeans where it is unseen afterwards.

Another thing, you can generate a lot of heat with a swipe or two across carpet. I have seen a handful of tips come off and a loose tip in a pool room can be hard to find with all the places it has to roll to.

My opinion, a bad habit everyone should break. Remember there are guys like me who go straight from the horse barn to the pool hall. People sometimes spit a little dip now and then. That sole walking on the carpet was sometimes just standing in piss in the bathroom too. Endless nasty things to be on the floor.

I was talking about this just last night. Some friends here in Shanghai screw their tip into the hard floor before putting it with the tip facing down in their case... I don't get it... (well, one dude has a tight case, and screws his butt into his shaft and then unsheathes it from his case like some knight wielding excalibur... so kind of get that, not that I would do that personally)

Spend all this money on a fancy tip, spend time shaping it, and you want it to hold as long as possible... then jam it into the floor, and leave it pressure downward in a case?

I never wipe chalk off the tip (occasionally prick it with a tool if it gets cakey). I wipe with a tissue before shaping. I place tip up in my case.

I take a second a wipe entire cue, getting all the chalk off tip b 4 putting in case.
somebody did that at my house Id bring my cousins dog to his house and let him drag his ass everywhere.

They would deserve it! I have heard a tale of somebody invited to play at a very nice home. They got through playing and he raked his tip across the carpet out of long habit. He slunk out like a moron after both the man and his wife saw this uncouth behavior and of course never got another invite!

How soft is your tip??!

I place tip up in my case.

That won't work with a JB case when it's full: I find I need to stagger the thick ends, so butt ends down, and shaft joints up (tips down). I wipe my tips off with a towel before sliding them into my case.

I wipe my tips of excess chalk.
There are no more carpets in my pool hall so don't use carpets, I either use a bar napkin or roll the tip under the rail and use the table cloth.

I always wipe my cue down with a towel. But tip I just leave as is.

😂 absolutely!

One friend uses an SS, I use a medium. Either way, it's downward force (unless you store your cue sideways)

I use a 3Seconds case. Two butts in Joint up. I use the one left over butt slot, which I added a pad to thicken up slightly, for a break shaft. All 5 shafts fit neatly, tip up.

Interesting to know that about the JB case, I had considered getting one for my other cues. But might just get a secondhand 3seconds one.

I just got a JB case
I think that the interior is way too tight, it very hard to pull the butts out and putting then in always hit the buttom of the butt in butts and shafts near it which could chip the cues...

JB is obsessed with keeping the cues inside the case without moving when holding the case upside-down with the lid open because of a freak accident he had years ago.... Best cases are with PVC pipes like he himself started with Instroke. Too bad you can't find many cases with that system with more modern design.

Always wipe my tip off to keep my case ends as clean as possible, also wipe down my cues. Try to remove oils and dirt from hands and chalk build up. It helps. Bcuz I still use that dirty old master.😂

I have never cleaned my tip. I clean the shaft when the cue is together. I take it to the men's room and wash my hands with soapy water. While still soapy I dampen a paper towel and wipe the shaft from tip to joint. I squeeze it tight and when clean it squeeks. A rinse wipe with a second towel damp with clean water then a burnish with dry paper finishes the cleaning. I have never felt a need to clean my tips. They go into the case tip down so if one gets stuck I can screw the butt into it. Any chalk that gets on the cloth enclosure is inconsequential.
