Anyone clean their tips on the carpet before putting it back in the case?

Very common some places. I would say it is about a 50-50 thing in some pool halls I have played in. Lesser players see better players doing it and soon it becomes the way things are done. Interestingly I have seen room owners do it.

You may get the chalk off but it seems rude. The other thing, I am more concerned with what I pick up off the floor than what I put on it. I have seen tips fly too.

Nope. I just drop 'em in the case tip down and move on.

I hit the shaft lightly with a dry, thin magic eraser sheet once a week or so and they stay smooth and clean with no visible bluing.

That's actually a good point.

Habits get ingrained. I could see somebody who does it at the pool hall regularly inadvertently doing the same thing somewhere else. No bueno!
 
A few years ago, the Turning Stone tournament used carpet under the tables. I think it also helped a little with deadening sound in that giant room too. I watched almost every top name guy/girl playing doing this before putting their shaft back in their case. For most, it looked almost like it was without thought. They'd unscrew the shaft and butt, point the shaft down and either twist or rub it on the carpet, then put the shaft into their case. This was often done while talking to someone, which is why it looked almost subconscious doing it. It was about then that I read a thread here about it, and how much chalk gets transferred into your case when you slide your shaft in, so I guess that's why they do it.

I've always had a small towel hanging from the loop on my cue case, kind of like a golf towel, but smaller. I took to wiping off my shaft, and wiping off the chalk from the tip on that towel before putting my shaft in the case. I do that with both the playing cue and the break cue. I like the idea of not adding more chalk dust to the lining of the tube in my case. I wish I did that right from the start of using that case.
 
I see people do it pretty regularly, even pros at tournaments but also at my local hall.

I'm a big fan of cleaning off my tips before they go back in my case and my case stays nice and clean because of it. But I don't use the carpet. I make a habit of grabbing a bit of paper towel from the bathroom and pocket it for when I'm done playing. Anytime I get food while I play I often end up with an extra napkin or two as well so I'll make sure I have one or two of those stashed in my case as well in case I ever forget to grab a paper towel
 
Been to a bunch of rooms/events and i'd like to have a dollar for every tip wiped off on the rug. Seen everyone from nedski to champions do it. I've seen the owner of a few spots do it themselves. Comparing it to a dog wiping its ass or wiping fried chicken grease is ridiculous.

Nothinig damnp unless u want a rock hard tip. dry napkin works as well as a dry carpet. Tho I don't think I've ever been in a pool hall that had carpets in the type of condition where anyone would notice if you wiped your tip on it.

Of course it is ridiculous, that's the point. I take my shoes off in my house and in my pool room. My guests generally offer to do the same without me asking. I have towels--paper and cloth that I will gladly let them use to wipe off the tip. It's a small thing, but it is a thing.

I really don't see the logic in it, a person could easily be wiping their tip into grease, grime, dirt, tiny shards of broken glass, etc.. None of that is good for the tip.

Okay so by dropping my shaft into the fabric tube of my case uncleaned, I might leave a little chalk on the fabric and even more on the bottom where the tip rests. 🤷‍♂️ okay with me. Chalk belongs on the tip. As for the shaft, it gets cleaned at the start of each session with a wipe down and inspection for slide in the bridge. Any resistance sends it to the wash room, for a thorough cleaning. 🤷‍♂️

Yep, I'm guilty, picked up this habit from watching the better players.
 
tip should go down in case so you can screw shaft on to pull it out of it ever gets stuck.
i dont want someones piss from their shoes after coming out of the john, on my tip.

pros can do it as ive seen enough of them sleeping under a table for the night. they may not care.
 
Disgusting that someone would do that. There is always a napkin or something available, or at the least carry a piece of paper towel in your case. There is no excuse for doing stupid chit like this. What someone else does should have no bearing on what you do.

A quik 'twist' and the chalk is gone. Never gotten grease, glass, or any other shit on my cue. There's more chalk dust in the rug from the idiots chalking bad than what comes off an occasional tip.

That's kinda the thing--you say that there is more chalk on the floor from idiots chalking badly than from people wiping tips on the floor. What about all the other things that people have done to the floor? Spilled drinks, broken glasses, walking out of the men's room, etc.. I don't know if you have ever take carpet out of a place, but even carpet that is properly cared for is a disaster. I wouldn't use carpet to clean anything.

But a quick question since I am specifically talking about home rooms: I have a 12x16ft pure wool rug under my table. Would you wipe the tip off on that at my house?
