UK Open 2025 Telford, UK, May 6-11

Two big mistakes by Souto. Krause showing his nerves, too. Gives the ball right back. Down 3-0. He is letting Jonas get comfortable and confident and that can’t be good.

While I agree with you we should not rely on Fargo Rating for semifinals and finals in a tournament [the reason we PLAY the tournament is because we DON'T know the outcome ;-)], there is not some significant lag or whatever in player ratings. It is not true Mickey has been playing at 810 speed for the last year. If he was, he's be over 800 now.

Mickey and Tyler have been on a similar trajectory. They have performance ratings over the last year for nearly 2,000 games of 793 and 794, and both have gone up in rating about 10 points, from near 780 to near 790 in that time.

Contrast that with Capito, Kledio, Jonas, and Moritz. The four had an average Fargo Rating a year ago of 788 (much like Mickey and Tyler had). Their average performance rating for the last year is 817, and their Fargo Ratings have increased to an average of 806.

i just said the magic word to prompt the product infallibility presentation 😉. are you saying that the respective fargo of kledio and mickey change the same, with no influence by their respective backlog? (which kledio doesn't have much of, because that region dgaf about fargo)

My eye test told me the same. Mickey has been inconsistent. Flamed out early in the Euro Open. Souto has been more consistent. He’s gotten through to single elimination in every Matchroom major since 2024.

Krause is the only player that I’ve seen in a long time that has no sponsor patches all over him…
Doesn’t he have any?
Is he a rich boy?

mickey has played 810+ level pool for a year now.
Sounds like you haven't watched Mickey much. Since he won the European Open, he hasn't fared well in the big field, big money events. Although 9th at the 2024 World 9ball, he was 33rd in the 2024 US Open 9ball, 33rd at the 2024 Hanoi Open, 25th at the 2024 International 9ball, 83rd at the 2025 Derby City 9ball and 65th at the 2025 European Open. The Scottish Open broke a fairly forgettable string of performances and, of course, he has kept the momentum going at the UK Open.

to my knowledge he doesn't. cue is a custom from one of them chinese high end makers, don't remember the name. looks good though.

possible he comes from money. he travelled to a lot of junior events when he was young and the danish federation is relatively non-supportive

Wow, up to 5-2, Souto and Krause have made as many errors as you'd expect to see in a whole match. On the bright side, it can only get better. I got up at 7:00 AM for this?

Oh wait. Looks like Souto is starting to find his form again. Two nice break and run racks for 7-2.

I find it interesting that the commentators have settled on calling Jonás Souto Comino by his family name (Souto), but they settled on calling Fancisco Sanchez Ruiz by his mother’s maiden name (Ruiz) years ago. Oddly enough, they call David Alcaide Bermudez by his family name as well. Unless Ruiz switched the order, which I guess is a thing in Spain since a few years ago, but not when he ass born

(I’m talking about the commentators. I know someone is going to try to explain to me about family name structures in Spanish. It’s inevitable)

Spoke too soon. Souto messed up position on that 6 up 7-2. Even JJ didn’t realize it at first. Sloppy match.

Souto told the MR announcers this week to drop the Comino part of his name.

I saw Krause five times this week and three times last week. Looks like something physical is bothering him, but he’s just made a lot of poor decisions starting with his Patrick match. He had been very good before the quarters.

Souto is playing like pre-2023 Souto. Too aggressive and careless. He had been superb before the semis and just blitzed opponents.

The tables do seem to be playing the tightest all week.

i think souto will crumble in semi or final.. he's a hothead and first major final day for him, the spanish nerves will get the better of him 😉

yapp or tyler wins
I think you’ve been calling Souto a hothead for a while. He was, but he’s maturing. Keeping his head into the game after a mistake.

He was a guest commentator this week. Smart and personable, I found him. Student of the game and knows his pool history. His father was a pro and owns a pool hall. So Souto started young.

About how I see it. His temperament may well have held the 2019 World Junior 9ball Champion back for a while, but Souto is showing much more composure in 2025.

Souto had zero missed balls in two matches last night. Five in his first match today.

He did settle down toward the end, but he’ll have to play smarter. Very confident player at the moment.

Mickey had a horror show.

By my reckoning, the final is worth $80,000 to Souto.

A win would get him a $40,000 first prize. The UK Open would be his third WNT ranking event win this year and it would lock up a Team Europe spot. At the Mosconi, Team Europe players will be heavily favored to win $40,000. Hence, $80,000 is probably what the title will bring for Souto.

Souto told the MR announcers this week to drop the Comino part of his name.

That’s good. Did he tell them how to pronounce his first name??? Maybe I’m being too presumptuous, but Jonás would be pronounced:

ho NAS

in Spanish. Not:

YO nus like that interview just said.

Boyes has made the absurd suggestion that Souto won't care who he plays in the final. Of course not, even though Yapp is about 50 Fargo points above Styer! Then again, the flip side of the argument is that if Styer plays well enough to beat Yapp, he'll obviously be in magnificent form.

As for me, I'll be rooting hard for Tyler. It's high time an American not named Shane (or Fedor) won a 9ball major.
