UK Open 2025 Telford, UK, May 6-11

That’s good. Did he tell them how to pronounce his first name??? Maybe I’m being too presumptuous, but Jonás would be pronounced:

ho NAS

in Spanish. Not:

YO nus like that interview just said.

don't forget the lisp. i think i would prefer JJ and karl not attempting the full spanish pronunciation

Only soft C and Z are pronounced in most of Spain as a th (per what they call Distinción). Any S that you might hear as a th is a bit not traditional (what they call Ceceo - which is only in a few regions in Spain. Is Jonás from one of those regions. I wouldn’t have thought so.

It is funny or whatever that every player that I’ve interviewed, none of them care how their name is mispronounced and some will even say the mispronunciation (eg Dennis Grabe) when asked.

I think you’ve been calling Souto a hothead for a while. He was, but he’s maturing. Keeping his head into the game after a mistake.

He was a guest commentator this week. Smart and personable, I found him. Student of the game and knows his pool history. His father was a pro and owns a pool hall. So Souto started young.

i hope you're right, because he's an entertaining player between the rails. he's known to move around in the chair quite a bit, etc. but everybody can mature, of course

About how I see it. His temperament may well have held the 2019 World Junior 9ball Champion back for a while, but Souto is showing much more composure in 2025.

this was 2024 and not very composed:

He's from Galicia (but lives down South so will ceceo) so possibly speaks Galician as well as Spanish. Galician is actually closer to Portuguese than Spanish and if someone asked me to guess where a random Mr Souto came from I'd guess Portugal before Spain. This might also partly answer some of the questions on other posts about naming conventions but maybe not because Galicians probably go with Spanish passport conventions.

Regarding mispronounciations, I think much of the world gave up a long time ago expecting the anglosphere to even attempt to pronounce their names correctly.

i don't entrust karl boyes with those distincións 😆

Styer's runout in rack 7 is a beauty and he has pulled to within 4-3. Good stuff so far.

Another superb rack in rack 8. Despite a couple of excellent defensive shots by Yapp, Styer wins the safety battle, followed by a solid runout. It's 4-4, and it's one hell of a match so far.

good match this. the shot clock guy is earning his pay, but it's close and tense.

is tyler playing with a kielwood shaft or is it just grubby?

Two balls from taking his first lead, Tyler, who has played beautifully in this one, hangs the eight. Yapp 5 Styer 4.

That 8 ball hurt my feelings a little bit! Lots of pool left. Hopefully he can bounce back.

Bet you're a little happier now after Tyler's brilliant jump in of the two and runout for 5-5. Tyler's level in this one has been inspiring.

That’s one way to bounce back! I have a strong bias for Tyler. He plays out of the same pool hall I go to. I really like him and his wife. I am a big fan.

First significant roll of the match came in Rack 11. Styer missed the two ball by a mile but Yapp ended up less than an inch from the two ball and had no really good options. Rack to Tyler and he now leads 6-5.

Used the same strategy in Rack 12. Missed the two but left Yapp a long combo with a jacked-up cue. Yapp had no choice but to play it and, predictably, missed. Styer runout means a 7-5 lead.

Maybe the pool gods understand how badly America needs a new man in the winner's circle! The finish line is in sight. Go, Tyler, go.

Uh oh, the pool gods switched sides in Rack 13. After a well-played Yapp safety, Styer made a brilliant two rail kick in of the two but all he got was a super-tough three ball with a jacked-up cue which he was not up to. Yapp pulls to within 7-6.

What a wonderful match this has been!

Yapp runs a very tough rack to tie it at 7-7.

In Rack 15, breathtaking safety play earned Yapp control of the table, but a missed seven ball was costly, and Tyler now has an 8-7 lead.

Of the horror! In Rack 16, Yapp flukes in the 2ball on a kick and runs out for 8-8.

This, to me, has been the most entertaining match of the year in WNT play.

More magic! Yapp's fine safety is answered by Tyler's jump in of a difficult 2ball but Tyler was not up to a fairly high-percentage bank of the 3ball, handing control of the table back to Yapp, who made easy work of the runout to gain a 9-8 lead.

The potting percentage belies the quality of the play here. There have been so many difficult shots made by these two fine cueists.

Yapp misses the 1ball in Rack 18, leaving Tyler a fairly routine bank, but Tyler misses and pays the price. Yapp on the hill at 10-8.

Tyler has missed two easy banks in the late stages of this match that are proving very costly.

3 missed banks if remember correctly
