I have long contended that my play on league night is sub par to my play when something is on the line. For a variety of reasons we all know.

There has been discussion here about that in the past and Mike Page has denied this is a factor in our overall fargo rating. That as a "better" player in league we just don't care as much about losing games after years of the drill. And therefore don't play as attentively as we are capable of.

Finally using the situational Fargo filter feature of the app I have solid evidence of this. Below is my entire match history results since I have had a Fargo rating filtered into two catagories. League play and Tournament play.

Fargo is just another handicap tool, it just happens to be more widely accepted. It's not perfect as you've proven here, which is why fargo should go away and everything should be "open" like it used to be

Unfortunately the only players that want to eliminate Fargo are the strong players who want to steal from league players in tournaments. When there is an open tournament advertised around here most of the higher "open" level players who bitch about Fargo are nowhere to be seen. Its like they don't want to compete against players their level.

Your league play could have been a couple nights against crappy teams so I don't think those 32 games have much validity.

League play is not the same for me as tournament or gambling. I think most players once they get to about a 600 fargo start to feel this way. Many of the league player where I live the league night is their time to bear down as it's their main competition. It's my time to wind down and drink a beer.

There is a varied history of what has and hasn't been characterized with the various attributes. We are working both on improving that for new information entering the system, and in some cases finding ways to get information for games already in the system in retroactively.

Unfortunately the only players that want to eliminate Fargo are the strong players who want to steal from league players in tournaments. When there is an open tournament advertised around here most of the higher "open" level players who bitch about Fargo are nowhere to be seen. Its like they don't want to compete against players their level.

I disagree with this, at least for the Northeast. You see the stronger players coming out for most of the open events. Fargo has become such a talking point that people match up less often unless they can negotiate some type of advantage, so more arguments. When the skill levels are unknown, you just play and adjust accordingly.

If you are unrated or above 600, there's so few events that pop up unless you like to travel. Then, even if you win the event, you still lose out due to travel costs.

It's become just a more widely accepted handicap system that allows people to complain about everyone sandbagging. Same exact arguments that you hear in APA, just on a bigger scale. I'm not against Fargo, its just become really annoying to hear about it from all the players around me.

I think the fair comparison in a match is your average Fargo against one of your situational Fargoes. That's assuming someone uses your average in a situation.

If one looks at my 4 scenarios, plus my overall average, those 5 all vary a bit from each other. I wonder if there would be a similar variation if there was a filter for a tuesday night tourney vs a wed night tourney. In other words, is the variation just noise, or real?

Probability and statistics gives a fairly simple way to estimate the expected error in a rating for a given number of games recorded. The fewer the games in the calculation, the larger the error in the estimate of the average.
