World Pool Championships 2025, July 21-26, Jeddah

Yes, for stroke fundamentals. Not even close to accurate for his defensive and tactical skills.
I’ve watched Fedor more than anyone on AZ. Of that I have no doubt. I watch his practice sessions (when I am practicing) for lord’s sake. Sjm is 100% correct. Gorst’s game has improved tremendously since he moved to the states . He would not be the same player if he had stayed in Russia. Same for his wife to be.

Lot of disappointments: Ouschan, Filler and Ko the biggest, but Kaci, SVB, Chua also played below par.

I think of it more as, other players stepped up. The favorites felt the pressure, no doubt. Lots of players did, even those who won. Roda I’ve seen with the yips before. Great game he has when he doesn’t feel the nerves.

Casper was fun to watch. SVB really should have beaten him, but the Finn played with confidence and abandon. He figured, why not, and didn’t overthink things. His break has been working and he really smashes the ball.

I think Fedor — my favorite Russian who’s becoming more and more American — is the favorite at this point. But Chung is picking it up, Biado has been clutch and FSR has found his second gear.

Darkhorses? Raga is very clever and, I did not see this coming, Aranas is playing without nerves. He always gets nervous.

I don’t consider Duong a dark horse. He is an in be tweener. His game has gotten so much better since he became a regular on the WNT tour. If Fedor doesn’t win, I hope Duong does. He is a lifelong pool sufferer, if you know what that means.
Very nicely said. Yes, a few of the stars underperformed, but the underdogs, for the most part, went out and got it, so they are to be respected and commended. Today's proceedings offered a reminder of just how hard it is to win the biggest titles. Still, you get awfully few Cinderellas at the biggest majors (World 9ball, US Open 9ball, China Open 9ball), but once upon a time, Darryl Peach worked his magic to win the World 9ball, so you never know.

Four guys seem to have the biggest pedigree here, and they are the very ones you've named (Gorst, FSR, Biado, KPC). Of the four, surely Gorst is the most likely champion. Any winner but these four would surprise me a little, but not a lot. They are all beatable.

As you noted, Roda, despite his win over Shaw, looked a bit shaky.

I'm guessing that classy cueist Ignacio will give Biado a serious run for his money.

The wild card, to me, still seems to be Ameer Ali, and I think I'll enjoy watching him tomorrow. If Raga breaks the balls as poorly as he did vs Chua, he'll have a tough go of it tomorrow vs Ameer Ali.

The Filipinos have really put on a show this week. All the respect to them.

I actually saw in DCC at 14.1 challenge room that Johan was training Fedor's thinking. After Fedor ran rack Johan questioned his patterns and over and over again tell Fedor to use his brain..
He was telling Fedor that he ran racks wrong and only run them because super shotmaking. You might have this one wrong..

If I’m Gorst I’m happy I’m in the top bracket. But then again it might be scary to face whoever has the fire to emerge from the gauntlet of the bottom bracket. We are in for some very intense matches.

The success of a great athlete has many fathers. But the biggest is themselves. They have to have the proper drive, motivation, dedication, mental toughness, and so forth. Not to mention the physical ability. That is where it all starts.

The next is the training they receive and the quality of teachers they have.

The final developer is experience. Against other top players and in different situations,

Gorst’s success stems from all three. He has the inner drive. He had good foundations in Russia. He sought out the best teachers like Johan. And he has learned from his experience, especially playing bank pool and one pocket in the U.S. (Same with Filler).

Johan can only be with him a few times a year, and Johan has taught many a player in America and Europe. Very few of them play like Gorst.

I was referring to defense and general tactical conceptualization, not pattern play. I'm sure that you are right in suggesting that Johan was his pattern play mentor in both 14.1 and 9ball, and a great mentor at that.

Those of us who have regularly watched him play in the US over the past three years have seen Fedor's tremendous development in defensive and tactical play. He brought the weakest part of his game up to the standards of his already wonderful ability to run the table and that's why he is now on a trajectory for the Hall of Fame.

I heard the ref announce 10 and then 5 two seconds apart from each other a good number of times.

yea, the melling biado match wasn't unique. and that ref wasn't the only one doing it. kledio missed the corner with like two diamonds on the FIVE shout. how hard can it be to use an app? i understand they may have to use native refs when there's many tables.. but in single elim in a world championship..no bueno.

i haven't watched his full matches but what i have watched from hoang has been totally flawless! since it was obvious the matches were lopsided i flicked over though.

i'm always rooting for hoang since he won me a bit of money in 2023. i guess raga is my number two pick. fun to watch.

Is that where you can find a lot of top pool players talking about current things in pool these days? I joined X a couple years back expecting to find top players like Shane and others speaking their minds but it seems like many pro pool players aren't active there. Either that or I couldn’t find their real accounts.

I felt they had problems with the conditions and the equipment from the start. MR should really rethink the location or at least the dates for this to work in the future.

But the conditions are equal to all, so the best players should come out on top.

I had a feeling before it started that the top names won't go the distance and that the last 16 will be made mainly of Filipino and Asian players. The amount of relatively unknown talent in this part of the world is crazy, and we don't get to see them often in Western events, so we don't know them, and then we are surprised that they beat the known top players.
