World Pool Championships 2025, July 21-26, Jeddah

I felt they had problems with the conditions and the equipment from the start. MR should really rethink the location or at least the dates for this to work in the future.

But the conditions are equal to all, so the best players should come out on top.

I had a feeling before it started that the top names won't go the distance and that the last 16 will be made mainly of Filipino and Asian players. The amount of relatively unknown talent in this part of the world is crazy, and we don't get to see them often in Western events, so we don't know them, and then we are surprised that they beat the known top players.
I think they are locked in to a multi year deal to host in Saudi.

Wow! 23,000-plus views on this World Pool Championship thread, and it ain't even over yet. :)
I think the major championships bring out the best in all of us here on AZB. There is so much good content in this thread from so many contributors.

We have reached crunch time. Only sixteen can dream of the 2025 World 9ball title at this point, and by end of today it will be just four.

We all have our favorites and our predictions but, for me, I'll be delighted for anyone that's good enough to win this. Greatness is measured in titles, and somebody will soon capture the most special title of them all in our sport.

May the best man win!

Probably won't happen, but I cheer for Mario He.
He came close many times, but never won a big title. He is a very humble guy and would deserve to be a world champion.

i was just gonna write that noone has given any thought to mario. what a moment that would be to get the monkey off his back! he's probably very long odds but he's very well liked

Cheating accusations
What Dominick Dunn states is 100 percent correct that waxing the balls can make a difference in play. Whether the waxing player was cheating with malice aforethought is something different. Without knowing all the details firsthand, it might be an acceptable practice in Philippines to wax the balls to make the conditions better.

I've heard of players putting razor blades in the side rails at Johnston City to give a player an edge, and this is definitely cheating since the opponent does not know about it.

I've heard of rubbing magnesium on the rails to make them bounce differently as well as putting magnesium inside a pool glove.

At the Glass City Open one year, Keith McCready was up against Charlie Bryant, and he accused Charlie of coughing deliberately every time Keith was getting ready to shoot a crucial shot. I thought Keith was overreacting until I saw reference to an article written in Sports Illustrated by Robert Coughlin, April 4, 1955, edition: The Annoying Body Noise Shark: A well-timed coughing fit, burp, or loud sneeze during your opponent’s shot can put a player off their game.

Of course, there's a difference between cheating, sharking, and ignorance of the rules.

i don't know. but these kinds of dramas in big events are probably inevitable, and not necessarily bad. when the IPT thing was going on they had forgot to state in the rules the one foot on the floor rule. a certain pro player and azb crazy poster found this loophole and caused a bit of controversy. archer wasn't happy that time

I've always liked Mario's game. He plays very high percentage pool. Still, it's tough to pick him because he has gotten the worst of the draw.

What a piece of crap.

For putting these rumors out there as if they are a "fact" because a couple of disgruntled people whined on facebook about it.

I decided to watch Ignacio on table 4 and did notice Carlo Biado almost manhandle the ref. Biado had a ball in hand and asked for the cue ball to be cleaned. The ref took his time, put down a ball marker (why? he had a ball in hand), and started cleaning. Carlo grabbed the cue ball from him and placed the cue ball, before the shot clock ran out. I'm wondering if it is the same ref that SVB was all pissed at.

See, THIS is how you properly start a rumor, with just enough truth...

What's the point of this? making the rail dead in a specific area? So, if you are a cheater, you know not to bank here?

This was during game 5, by the way. Carlo asked for a new referee.

Jeremy Jones just shared the shotclock referee on Carlo Biado's table and the other referee were clashing, making it challenging to know which referee Biado is supposed to listen to.
