Hello, ladies and gentlemen.

I wonder if anyone could enlighten me as to the correct ordinal number for this tournament, held at Asbury Park in New Jersey.

I counted up the previous events listed on Wikipedia, which suggested August 1976 was the 97th staging of this competition. I then, however, found an article promoting a 71st World Straight Pool Championship in 2011. This has left me somewhat confused.

If someone could provide a definitive and official answer about the 1976 event I would be much obliged indeed.

Thank you, dear chap.

That is the page from which I calculated my original assumption of 97th World Straight Pool Championship, but it doesn’t chime with other sources.

I’m trying to determine an official answer if possible.

Are you counting the unsanctioned years after 1912??

Whoever made that wiki page should explain why there are 5 or more entires per year in the early years.

Therein lies the problem, sir. I just don’t know.

Wikipedia suggests the 1976 event was the 97th and 2010 is as far as their list goes. 2010 being the 112th if they are accurate.

A poster appeared on AZB promoting a 2011 World Straight Pool Tournament as the 71st staging of the event.

Perhaps bob or jay could lend a hand.

I still think it boils down to who promoted/staged the events. Hell, Joe Blow could have held the event in a titty bar and called it a WC. There wasn't ONE main oveseer of this deal. I wouldn't worry about it myself. That Wiki page list is the most up to date that i know of. I hate this saying BUT: 'It is what it is.' I'll add:'Til it isn't'.

Thank you for your insights, gentlemen. They all really are very much appreciated.

Just for clarification, I am compiling a provenance card detailing the history of the Romanique II balls, which were used at the 1976 event at Asbury Park in New Jersey.

I would like to include the tournament’s ordinal number on the card and was striving to be as accurate as possible.

WTH is a ronanique2 ball? almost afraid that i'm asking this. ;) never mind, found your thread on them. kinda funky lookin.

Pool ball collectors like me consider them to be one of the classic sets, Mr G.

They are very desirable (and valuable) now… with the Romanique I sets even more so!

... There wasn't ONE main oveseer of this deal. ...
B.B.C. Co. (Brunswick) was in charge of the world championships until about 1950. After that it was the BRPAA, the PPPA, the PBT?, and at last the WPA, which was finally an international sports-governing body.
