He screwed me on a cue sale. I sold him an original Mike Sigel signature cue for $1,000 in perfect, like new condition. After he got the cue he decided he didn't want it and complained to Paypal that it had scratches on it. He then sent me back my cue with severe damage to the butt. Paypal gave him a refund the day the cue was delivered back to me. When I confronted him about the damage to the cue he went quiet on me. Paypal closed the deal and will do nothing for me!

See attached photos. None of this damage was on the cue when he received it from me.

that sucks jay. and it looks like there was a name on it or one was messed up taking one off.

i guess if you dont know someone its better to get the money in a cash app like venmo first.

nowadays i google the person and find out about them. and where they live and look at a picture of it.
get real phone number etc. its gotten where the buyers have all the power in the sale.

in a way you are kind of lucky you even got the cue back. instead of an empty box.

Sigel's hand signed signature is still okay at the base of the butt. I realize my mistake now in letting him pay me via regular Paypal channels. He is probably a reseller and had a buyer waiting for the cue. Somehow Yates damaged the cue and his only out was to blame me and complain to Paypal. And it worked. He got his money back.

P.S. He blocked me on FB. Of course!

Karma never loses an address, take solace in the hope of it. Sorry for your unfortunate circumstance. I often wonder what happened to people being honorable and doing what’s right for the sake of what’s right.

He most probably had second thoughts on the purchase and scratched up the cue to get his money back from pay pal. Sorry to hear of your headache and more with this guy - most internet sales work out just fine - but now- seems like with everything in life today - we have to go to even greater lengths to protect ourselves against the idiots and fraudsters that are never investigated or prosecuted.

Our systems, unfortunately, allow both buyers and sometimes sellers to commit fraud with no recourse - as sellers are now forced to end honest buyers protection by demanding F&F payments or zelle like payments. This also opened the door for dishonest sellers to mask themselves by demanding those same payment types— the internet sales world is getting worse- not better - and AI has now almost totally destroyed your ability to fight back against fraudsters as personal customer service is gone forever on most sites.

It's impossible to speak to a real person on Paypal! Their AI just keeps looping you back around and around on their website during disputes and so called resolutions. You are forced to navigate their system to make a response or even offer proof of your claim. Their Chat assistant also does the same thing, only sending you to other sites on their website. After they "settle" a complaint on Paypal, it's as if it never existed. It's now gone and you cannot send any new information to them. It won't be accepted when you try to submit it.

Yes - ALL of the online “customer service” sites have now gone full AI and will block any human interaction with run around AI tactics — UPS , FED EX, E BAY , online retailers, etc. Etc. Have all laid off most of their phone help staff and also reduced outsourced phone services to justify senior executive buy- ins to AI cost savings “ investments” . This is all at the expense of the honest consumer or seller who now cannot get any human response to buying, selling, shipping problems or issues.

AI is the next revolution in reducing human contact now going well beyond what the internet initially did to reduce human interaction ; added features such as texting and e mail did even more to reduce human voice contact.

You have to shake your head when we thought is was revolutionary in the mid 1980s as fax, phone voice mail, etc. started to eliminate company receptionist and secretarial positions - we had no idea how far we would become as a robotic society!

Jay,
Any chance the damage occurred during/via shipping? I'm just thinking out loud. Would insurance have covered the cost of any shipping damage/refinish? Might be worth exploring if that is an option.
I'm sorry for the situation. Lousy for sure.

anytime we sell to an unknown its tasking a risk. unless we get cash in advance or use an intermediary who does it for us..

its always been that way, that some just don't pay if they think they can get away with it.

at least there are cash apps now that the money is secured. and the only real way to go if you dont know the person.

paypal is setup to protect the buyer from the seller. i closed my account with them.

Good response here. I shipped it to him in a carefully packed box with adequate protection wrapped around the cue. He sent it back in a cheap $10 cue case. On closer inspection I can see that the cue could easily move around inside the case and there are two exposed hinges where the damage occured. I did tell him that he was responsible for shipping but he remained silent on that subject. I do not know if he took out insurance or not. It came back in a Priority Mail triangle box.

I'll take pics and add them here, showing how it was shipped back to me.

Sorry to hear Jay. Were the funds from the sale still in your PayPal account when they refunded this guy? I'm aware of this type of scam and luckily it hasn't hit me yet.

now that the pics are there it does look like he sent it back in good shape but his packaging was the cause of the damage.
so it likely wasnt intentional to cheat you. other than to not complete a fair sale.

but his mistake, so he is responsible for it getting back to you in original condition.

if he was really trying to cheat you he wouldnt have even sent it back or never would include a case even though it was a junk one.

so he should pay to have it sent back and pay you for it. or pay the charge for restoring it to your original condition if it can be.
it's not worthless just diminished in value. and needs work to resell.

you must have his phone number and get texts to him to maybe get a resolution.

Take pictures of every square inch of the cue & the packaging before it leaves your hands for shipping.
You can and should do that - but they can still claim shipping damage which is on the seller - AND - more to the point- you just cannot get anyone on the phone anymore to explain your position - AI has removed that ability!
