i dont play snooker and dont know all the rules
but someone i know knows i play pool and asked me this
he said he was watching a snooker match and was impressed that the players kept hitting the pink ball but not trying to make it just keep it close to the pocket on purpose
can anyone figure out a situation where something like that would happen in a snooker game?

It must have been at the end of the game without red balls on the table. In that case, if one player is behind by more than the number left on the table (13, pink and black) he will be trying for a snooker so the leader fouls and gives up points. At the same time the leader will be trying to make the pink, or at least leave it near a pocket, which makes the safe much harder for his opponent.
