it is a different game from the past as least rotation games which are the standard for determining excellence now.

with ball in hand anywhere on the table for a foul changes the game. as opposed to shootout where you had strategy and little kicking.
as well as jump cues
and special racks where you can play individual balls on the break.

it is what the game is now, but hard to compare players who had to play conventionally.

Here is a pro match from 1991. Two world champions. Large pockets. And somewhat old rules, except on the break and for illegally pocketed balls.

We played some 8 ball last week using the original rules where BIH was in the kitchen. It changed the game
enormously and running the table with BIH only happened 4x games during probably 20 games of 8 ball. The
games took longer and safety play became literally almost an offensive strategy. It was different & a lot of fun.

Then we played 9 ball racking with the 9 ball on the foot spot. In a dozen games of 9 ball, no one made the 9
on the break and a object ball only dropped on 3 of 12 break shots. I liked it much better & all the games were
played on a 9’ Diamond table with 4.25” CPs. It seemed to neutralize the advantage of having a powerful break.

If my memory is correct we used to play 9 ball by fast rules. We spotted nothing and scratches you shot from behind the line. If the next ball was behind the line we threw it down and shot the next lowest ball outside the line. You only spotted the ball before the money ball.

No ball in hand but if you didn't hit the ball the player had the choice to take the shot or give it back. I'm testing my memory but I remember playing by those rules in many parts of the country.
Also general push out. You always had to discuss the rules before playing. I never argued about rules. I just played however they played.
In black pool rooms the rules seemed to keep changing in the middle of the game. Often played a game called 8 Ball in Georgia in black rooms. Never saw it anywhere else.

It's probably just settling into the revised niche. Looks the same with new rules to me. There might be more sophistication in the to and fro of lengthy competition but then I could never stick around for a whole ahead set so I wouldn't really know.

yep old rules and they worked fine and the games moved along nicely.

yes, if you missed hitting the ball it was the same as a push out.

still have to talk about rules. such as whats behind the line. base or ball.
push shots. pay after every game. how long to play if winner.
