This Keeps Happening

No, not racking the balls the exact same way every time. I just used the 4B, 5B, and 6B as the example in this diagram. It could be any of the balls.

And it might look yummy but going from the 4B to the 5B is the key shot in this rack. Doesn't look like there is much there to me. I know I could not get this out. Maybe Efren or SVB could, who knows.
Something wrong with a solvable problem?

BM mentioned Corey. 5, 9 IOW.
Even if you land wrong on the 4, you could billiard the 9 and/or shoot the 5 in the other side.
If I'm shooting well, there's a 4/6/9 trilliard that will send the balls to the sides of the table and leave you the 5 in the side or the 5 in either corner if the CB gets away.

The outsville rack is the worst one. Hard to get a tight rack.

However, one of the balls staying near the 9 is very common with a soft break and a template rack. Some players play it on purpose, as it leads to short games with an early 9 combo. That's the Corey comment earlier in the thread.

If you are breaking hard like 1990, you shouldn't have it, and it means you are not racking them good.

I use the Outsville template for breaking racks of 9B. And as you all know I have been breaking those racks on my new Diamond Professional. The issue is that I usually end up with about four balls all close together as shown in the diagram. In this case it's the 4B, 5B, 6B, and 9B. The 6B blocks the 5B into the upper corner and the 9B blocks the 5B into the bottom corner. Thus position from the 4B to the 5B is very difficult. All these balls so close together has been making runouts very difficult for me.

My question is simply - is this normal for a template?

Sir,

Carefully place the cue along one cushion of the table. Step back, pour a glass of the highest proof stuff you have, a drinking glass full! The last thing you need is to discover you need a ten dollar template when you have spent ten grand installing a new table!

Like others, I don't see that table is that bad. Looks fine from Louisiana!(grin)

I suggest running four ball racks or running six ball racks from where the cue ball stops, make a ball or not. Do this at a brisk pace for an hour or two. I think you need to unlax and let things happen.

I wouldn't know. Put the 5 elswhere/do something different with the cue ball/shoot the 4 from center table so you can land on the 6 and shoot the 5 in the side.

Not trying to mention the obvious here, but carom the cue ball into one of the balls to move it so you get better shape. They're close enuf to do that easily.

I just got to make a comment okay I'm almost 80 and I probably don't fit into today's pool anymore. But the fact is I don't like the template. I'd rather see the balls just racked whatever happens happens the rack is tight it's tight. If a ball moves but no one notices it so be it.

Players rack for themselves, rack for the other player, or you have a referee racking I don't care. The game is not supposed to be mechanical or robotic. It requires a randomness about it. To watch a tournament where whoever's breaking makes the one in the side every break and then shoots is horrible. Your playing breaking first shot every rack.

What is the B after every number supposed to stand for?

Or both. Trilliard to me.
I move balls and use them to stop and play position off of all the time!! It's an important part of the game. I think all good players need that ability.
Especially on small tables.
Many position players get rattled when you start changing the table up. I don't do that a lot, but if I notice a carom on the cheese, you can bet your sweet ass I'm gonna roll it!!
It's why I don't play tournaments.
I don't derive as much fun from the intense focus and concentration required to put racks together as I once did. Just running balls doesn't juice me anymore. Now I'm a more relaxed player, out to get as much enjoyment as I can from this game, albeit a different way than others.
Tomato Tomato.

Just toss the 5,6,7,8, and 9 out on the table and try running them. You'll start seeing the out patterns coming up. Or just the last 4 balls, if 5 stumps you at first.
