A lot of what I do doesn't make sense. The reason I try to not overthink things when I am down on a shot. The shot has worked just like this for decades. A bit late to start thinking about it now!(grin)

Exactly. In my case, getting my conscious mind out of the way helps greatly.Your conscious mind is INCAPABLE of calculating all the things necessary for even the most simple shots. If you had to rely on conscious thought alone you'd be lucky to even strike the cue ball.
Arguing over every little nuance of "aiming" is an exercise in futility.
Without repetition and training the subconscious to recognize and perform the necessary functions, you're pretty much lost. Systems and drawing lines and angles simply speed up the process of training the subconscious.
Employing systems during play distracts and focuses the conscious mind, letting the real powerhouse do the work.
Here's the thing about that. Why is failure inevitable?Exactly. In my case, getting my conscious mind out of the way helps greatly.

Why would it be?
The geometry wont interfere with your mental state either. People like you still needs good bearings to get it happening.Funny thing, while I am not a great banker, when my game is stale for whatever reason, my straight in shooting falls off a lot more than my banking. My straight in shots rely more on cyphering and eyeballing. My banking depends more on calculating available angle and speed, feel if you will. Somehow just looking and letting the unconscious do the cyphering well below surface level works a lot better than trying to work with surface signs.

Ok... maybe I'm dense, but I don't follow what that has to do with what I said.Rhetorical. People err and dismiss it to inevitable. They may have choice words and simply keep chugging away. The points and lines are relevant because being aware of the specific shot being attempted will at the very least serve to curb incompetence. The geometry is also the best practice gadget. It automatically maps any shot and won't budge while you work on congruence.
About clear head? Ok. Just maintaining CG identity.Ok... maybe I'm dense, but I don't follow what that has to do with what I said.
Ok, clear head would be a good way to describe what is going on when I am in the zone. When I googled CG I got ambiguous results, and hyperexoexecution was not found.About clear head? Ok. Just maintaining CG identity.
CG and hyperexoexecution are separate entities. You know; measure twice cut once blah blah...
CG is mostly what this thread is. Contact Geometry.Ok, clear head would be a good way to describe what is going on when I am in the zone. When I googled CG I got ambiguous results, and hyperexoexecution was not found.
Ok. Yes, I do that in both playing music and pool. Both can be competitive but in pool I only got hostile when the other guy was being a dick or trying to psyche me. My revenge was to beat them soundly and show them they never had a chance. Other than that, I was just free stroking as much as possible. Mosconi did not talk about aiming systems in his little red book so I never learned one. Just seeing the contact point and the path of the CB post contact was enough. My physics training helped with the mechanical aspects.CG is mostly what this thread is. Contact Geometry.
Hyperexoexecution is a double positive I just coined to indicate (sarcastically) the process of unconscious execution. Playing music works well like that but I think not so much, pool. Pool has a significant element of hostility that cannot be ignored.
how does having a math background contribute to NOT learning a system as most are mathematical????I don't know if it was my math background or what but I never learned an aiming system for banks either. To this day, I just get down, glance at the target pocket out of the corner of my eye, return the the CB and when it feels right, drain it without seeking a contact point.
HAMBI don't have a system for aiming bank shots or kick shots; I just experimented with it until I could do it by feel/intuition. If I had a system, I might be able to teach it but I wouldn't know where to start with teaching my method to someone else.
And I think at least thousands of balls are needed for understanding or getting a feel for bank shots, but it also helps to know what the balls are doing and what changes the lines -- cloth, rails, speed, spin, cut angle, .... For some people, it helps to experiment with banks on the practice table, so you can try something again immediately and maybe come to a conclusion. Some systems at least get you started and have something to compare the on-table results against.HAMB
What is that? Google says it stands for Hokey Ass Message Board, which I don't think you meant.HAMB

I was spending 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week on pool practice so I am sure I shot many thousands of balls in that time. My physics training helped with understanding what I was seeing, coefficient of friction and so on. I also made mental notes when a more experienced player made bank shots. And I think at least thousands of balls are needed for understanding or getting a feel for bank shots, but it also helps to know what the balls are doing and what changes the lines -- cloth, rails, speed, spin, cut angle, ....
