What beginner pool tip do you wish you learned sooner?

Hi everyone,

I've been spending more time researching beginner pool tips, accessories, and game room setups while building a newer billiards resource site.

One thing I've noticed is that there seems to be a lot of advice online, but not all of it is useful for newer players.

If you could recommend one beginner tip, article topic, or lesson that every new player should learn early on, what would it be?

I've been collecting ideas and resources while continuing to build out my site:

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

First lesson I ever took, the guy absolutely insisted I change to a closed bridge. I wish I hadn't listened, because my open bridge was fine and I find myself reverting back after decades. My tip... embrace your own "best" stroke. One can improve without compromising what feels natural.

1. hit center of cue ball or along the vertical line only( draw or follow if needed),

until you can easily run multiple balls and play basic position for your next shot.

2. and practice keeping a straight stroke by doing it along the rail or even at a table until it is second nature.

Best tip I can give is spend a bit of money on a couple of pro lessons to establish good fundamentals.
It’s impossible to build a tower if the fundamentals are bad

Engender a relationship with players in your local room whose games you admire and who look look like they can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Ask them questions every once in awhile about shots, techniques, and your set up. Offer to pay their time or buy them a drink for their trouble.

Don't waste a lot of money trying to find the perfect tip, or cue, that will make you shoot better. Not that I ever did that.

Let the weight of the cue do the work.

Buy whatever painted cue Predator puts out this week. It will add at least 50 Fargo. /s

If I had it to do over again, I would have taken lessons much, much earlier on if not immediately.

The best advice i had : to learn to install my cue tips myself and how to take care of my cue and the balls.

Most common pieces of advice i give beginners:
- Slow down
- Stay down on the shot
- Relax your hands/arms
- Be smooth through the cue ball

For intermediate players figuring out cue ball control:
- Use the natural path of the cue ball. Don't be afraid to follow.
- Spin *IS* speed. (also learned from one of my bad habits)
- Learn to use the cushions to slow the cue ball down. (2-rail stun is one of my favorite position shots)
- Your safety doesn't need to be locked up, distance/awkward is good enough against 99% of players.
