Old Matches - How important is commentary?

I know beggars can't be choosers, but the score is 10000000% the most important thing. If you can do an overlay of that, that's all that matters. Commentary doesn't matter nearly as much. If Mosconi came back from the dead to play Efren, I don't think I'd watch it if it had no continuous score.
Agreed, keeping track of the score is the most important part of the videos. I get annoyed when the score ticker isn't on the screen for a few mins in modern matches.

With these really old matches, that had been posted lately, the fact the footage does exist in the first place. is amazing. And very watchable, i don't think the Commentary, is as important, when it comes these, old tapes.

I think that a commentary should be done like Earl the Pearl does it. Only one person doing it to start. When you have 2 people in the box they are telling stories, cutting up etc. Earl gives you insight on every shot of how he would play the shot and give other options also, Its like you are getting to see and hear what they are thinking as if they are at the table. It is almost like a lesson and makes you think. A lot of times its like wow he is right i would have screwed that up. You actually get to focus and can concentrate without all the distractions.

I think some commentators are great on their own, but there are others that I think need someone on the mic with them.

I was listening to the Legends of the Cue interview with Pat Fleming the other day and he pointed out how Sigel is better in the booth by himself. I would agree with that.

Truthfully, he’s a little hard to take. Pat had him paired with Mark Wilson for a couple of years of the International Open and it made the matches unwatchable with the sound on. I don’t think, at least for me, having him in the booth alone would make a difference, unless liberal amounts of duct tape were applied to his mouth.

Mike was one of the greatest players there ever was, but his ego and inability to NOT talk about himself makes him unsuitable for commentary. YMMV
