Old Matches - How important is commentary?

I'm curious as to how some of the Accu-Stats fans feel about this one. I am finally starting to get some of the really old Accu-Stats tapes digitized and some of these are from events before Pat was doing commentary on tape (late 80's).

How important would commentary be on this old content to you? It seems a little strange to have someone record commentary in 2025 over the top of a 35+ year old match. It might be fun for a couple of them, but there might be 100 of these matches in the archive.

I am undecided on the question.

Commentary not important if there’s existing ambient background sounds.

If the tracks are completely silent then dubbed over commentary would be good.

I am thinking the same way. I do want to go through and add scoring to them though. It might be fun to pick one or two of them and dub some commentary over the top, but definitely not all of them.

Thanks,
Mike

Not even close Mike. Original commentary is absolutely critical. Modern commentary over old school pool is like beer on captain crunch-just doesn’t mix well

Fatboy<——-preserving history in its entirety is key😃 just like the 5 is orange!

Modern commentary might work if the commentators had some close connection to the match, tournament and/or players.

Otherwise I agree with Fatboy.

Scoring graphics would be welcomed.

I wouldn't go to that trouble, at least if the goal is to sell more. I think people are going to order ones that just appeal to them, and most of the orders I think will be from people who lived that era. My suggestion to try and sell more and make them more appealing, is to list the accustats ratings and also, if there are good runs. I mean, I have a few matches from back then, when Strickland and Davenport had 6 packs, because it was winner breaks. Also, for straight pool, again the high runs listed would help. I look forward to seeing the straight pool matches you have. I am sure I will order some of those. Brian

Commentary wouldn't be necessary but hopefully you can hear the balls/crowd sounds. It could be a fun thing to get the player to commentate on the match if it were a really special one and could be arranged. One of my favorite recent-ish pool things was where Earl was commentating on his recorded matches.

If no score at all times, don’t even upload. Matches are completely unwatchable without, even if it’s Efren vs Parica in 1987.

Commentary maybe just 1 or 2 matches for fun. Way too much work otherwise, for little or no payback. Maybe have Earl do it. He’s awesome behind the mic and knew all the players.

Please make sure the aspect ratio is correct. I saw someone on YouTube post matches from the 80’s and he stretched them all out to 16:9, ruining them.

Thanks for letting me be a beggar and chooser;)

From the small amount of very old Accu Stats tapes I've seen that basically only has Pat interject every few minutes to update the score, I'd only add the score on the screen as you suggest. Just the sounds of pool balls and the occasional lighter sparking up a cigarette is perfect for me. I don't really miss the commentary.

Although . . . . iusedtoberich brings up an interesting thought re: Earl. If the players are still around it would be interesting to have them do a player review of their old selves. You know Sigel would do it in a heartbeat - he's his favorite subject (and I actually like MIke's commentary a lot).

commentary from back then, why would you want to lose the history?

i think the commentary of old videos is as important as the game being played

it would be tragic to put music or anything over it and lose that for ever imo

Do you mean to have someone do the commentary now to the video? What are the chances you can get some of the old timers to do it, especially whoever was in the match? I always loved listening to the player review tapes, if one of the players in the match can record new commentary as a player review that would be WOW.
