Two of the upcoming WNT ranking events canceled

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I think local and regional events held in pool rooms should NOT have added money. When you gamble 1-1 with someone, it's your money vs his. A local weekly event is all the player's money in the pot, and that's it.

How do you go from that to a 20k added event held in a pool room? There are no fans in pool for a regional event. The only people in the room are the players and maybe a GF tags along. There is no way for the TD to make up that 20k added by selling a few extra hamburgers.

I think that's why these MR "satellite" events get cancelled. They can't cover the added money, and a promoter would have to be a fool to come with it out of pocket.

As a player in that 650-750 range. I was signed up and paid for entry to Mcdermott open. 7 hours away. I play as many of the bigger tournaments I can just to play better players. Def stinks.

Me too.

In days past I have played in many, many events just to play better guys and champions -- most often I have crashed and burned but once in awhile I've snapped off a win which always felt remarkably good. In any case I always felt I had some kind of a chance.

However, with FR ... it kinda kills the mood. Whereas before you could tell yourself, "Short race, anything could happen." Now you look at the FR disparity and pretty much say FI.

just sayin'

The WNT ranking system, which is based on prize money earned, appears to have a built-in imbalance. Fedor Gorst's record-setting $250,000 payday for winning the 2024 World Pool Championship, followed by another $100,000 as runner-up in 2025, allowed him to remain atop the rankings for well over a year.

Considering that most WNT events award approximately $40,000 to the winner, the World Championship carries a disproportionately large influence on the rankings. As a result, a player's standing can be heavily impacted by one or two exceptional performances rather than consistent results across the tour. While major championships should certainly carry greater weight, the disparity in prize funds raises questions about whether money won is the best measure of season-long performance.

If Emily Frazer changes anything, I hope it's the WNT ranking system.

it certainly is not a good thing to use for rankings of any sort.

but amount won is a true measure of your success. as that is what you are playing for.

what good is being ranked number one and needing a backer because you cant finance your career yourself.

the smart players would go to where they had the best earn for their time and expenses.

To be clear I have great sympathy for players like you. In many places you can’t even enter most tournaments (even with giving a spot) and so cancellation of events with the big boys is doubly bad for you.

I do wonder if it’s possible for a WNT sanctioned tournament to have staggered entry fees. If the post I saw was right, $400 is a lot of money to pay for an average pro event for guys like you who are unlikely to run super deep. Or some kind of side pot for the top 4 players under 700 or 725 or something.
That's a really good idea. They typically add money to the tournament, so that's there no matter what.

The tournaments were cancelled, so now the pro's are screwed. So if they did a staggered entry based on fargo, then did the separate sidepot, you'd get more players in the pool hall to eat and drink and have the tournament for the pro's to compete.

This is not a pro-MR defense piece just simple facts: there is BIG difference in a MR-sanctioned and a MR-RUN event. MR, or any other outfit like them, has no control over what happens in regard to organizers on sanctioned events. These cancellations are most likely down to the local organizer/promoter and not MR.

Who wants to go to Yuma? No disrespect to any AZB members that live there, but it's in the middle of nowhere, hard to get to unless you want to drive for hours and the accommodations are, shall I say, less than optimal. Who picked Yuma?
I kinda agree but Yuma is only 150mi from San Diego and that casino/hotel looks pretty nice. Still, it is a tad remote compared to places they could go. I'd guess the tribe/casino made them a helluva deal on rooms.

It's over 170 miles from San Diego. Almost a 3 hour drive. Why would a player fly into San Diego then drive 3 hours? Waste of time and money.

I just don't know about FR...

I sometimes wonder, if I were a young man again, and everyone used FR for dating, and you asked a 720 out, and you were just a 650...

Has no one thought of taking the train? ;)
Well, I looked into it. My best bet is from LA, not San Diego. The only train is not every day and gets into Yuma at 3AM. I assume that will be fine. Coming back I leave Yuma at midnight and get to LA about 6AM. Again, no choice. Round trip is $93. 💰 (y)

I would tell the 650 he either needs more confidence, or needs to be funny 😂

As an AZ native, I thought Yuma was a weird choice, but now it’s gonna be super fun. The wife decided to go and use it as a chance to see her best-y who is driving from So-Cal. Right in the middle for her and us. Then we scored the hat trick, an ABnB that allows pets, has a pool AND a pool table.

The girls hang out by the pool with the dogs and me and a buddy will hang at the tournament and watch the monsters!

I will find you Bob, I haven’t forgotten the virgin screwdriver.

Gonna be HOT!

What monsters are going to Yuma?

Not only do you have to get yourself to Yuma, you have to fade single elimination? Wow.

I'd be curious if they even get 64 ranked WNT pros to attend.

In case you aren’t on their contacts, here is apparently a 20% off link for tickets for the next day or two.
