I am whoofing at the whole country (or maybe the Midwest) and maybe it’s more of a friendly bark

Does your pool room have a 700-plus Fargo-rated player that is willing to gamble cheapish? When I say cheapish, I mean $20 -- $50 / game one-pocket, or maybe short one-pocket races for $100 dollar sets, or something near this. There is no need to name him here, if you know of such a player.

Does this 700-plus player want to match up against an out-of-town, pencil-pushing, lawyer.? I am your huckleberry…maybe.

That’s right kollegedave is coming out of his basement to a town near you. Empty your bank accounts and get ready, or maybe just take $500 out and get a sandwich.

This is my proposal:

I will travel to you. In reality, I am probably confined to the Midwest, south, or mid-Atlantic, but if you live in the Northeast maybe something can be arranged for the right situation. I would propose we negotiate the game in private and not here, but I am not a 700 plus player. In return for playing cheap, I will offer a game that is slightly in my opponent’s favor (complete with references), and I will stand and fight.

I would like to play some long-ish sessions (5 – 12 hours), provided I can manage to not get blown off the table. I have privately made this offer to a few 700-plus local legends, and all of them are not interested. I am hoping that if I cast a wider net, maybe there is a player somewhere that wants a good-natured sparring partner.

I understand that players at this skill level often prefer larger action, sorry, that’s not what I am offering.

Soon-to-be slightly poorer,

One pocket is alive and well in Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. You might consider a trip to buffalos in New Orleans. You will get all the one pocket action you can handle.
I am told they have tables there where a sign says "no gambling cheap" or something to that affect. I am worried I would be in deep water with sharks there. I am less of a shark and more of piranha or something like that.

Doesn’t sound like a rule that is actually enforced. That’s there as a joke. Trust me they will bet cheap that water isn’t wet in that room. While there are sharks there it does have its fair share of minnows who think they are whales. If you are serious about this endeavor buffalos is the best and most logical option. The atmosphere and characters in the room are second to none.

Get'em, Dave!

You're a 900 Fargo in heart!

Outside of tournaments, I haven't seen anyone playing one-pocket in a pool hall in decades.
I quit going to pool halls for 20 years, started going (still seldom) and see one pocket being played almost every time I go to Chesters in OKC. If I go to Slick Willies I see nothing but people at the bar for the most part. I have no idea whatsoever what the fargo ratings might be of the people I see playing.

I am in east of Lexington, Ky about 65 miles and have a 9 foot Diamond at my pad that is setup in my opinion satisfactory to your needs. I could provide references and would require the same from you as well. Only been playing one pocket for about a year now. Your game probably a bit stronger than my game. I have played in the Derby and have made 4 to 5 rounds in the 9 ball before. Played One Pocket this past year and won one match and lost two. If things check out on both sides and you would be willing to adjust to make it fair to both players I wouldn’t mind a sparring parter. Let. Me know your thoughts. I am 66 years old and love the game. 9 ball is my stronger suit tho

Most of the 700+ players in AZ play each other cheap sets. I play $50 races to 7 (big table 10-ball) with guys like Joven Bustamante, Mitch Ellerman, Nick DeLeon, Bobby Emmons anytime I get the chance. And anyone traveling through town that wants to get a decent-sized bet down will be able to find a game.

Aaaaaaaaand, people play one pocket here in every pool room, every day. Not me, I don't care for it.

It took me awhile to warm up to 1 pocket but now that I have played it a few times I actually enjoy it.

You want references on a $20-50 game of one pocket?

Never felt it was good to let them know your coming when you don't know who's who, but it's a good meme post.
I'd go to a room park myself for a week or so and feel it out.
In my traveling days, if I liked the area, I'd rent a room for a couple months, get a job bartending and climb the ladder$.
The good players will find you for sure.
I've never been in a rush to lose, because losing $50 is actually losing $100 in my book, the fifty I should of made and the fifty I lost.
If your not concerned about losing all the time go for it. Tho I find that hard to believe, plus the better players will never show their true speed.

You got that right
I understand you want to know who is coming into your house. It appears he is looking for more of a pool hall game as he cited 5-12 hours.

Heck, we don't know who comes into the hall to play, and it is much less awkward walking out of a hall with someone's cash than it is their house. Regardless of how nice the person is (and you seem to be very nice.) it is just a bad feeling gambling in someone's house or a house made to be a gambling place like a few places in KY and Southern Indiana have become.
