Dynasphere Challenger Ball Set

I worked in a machine shop for 2 years as an intern when I was 20... was never formally a machinist. Anyway, I bet a guy that was a machinist I could put a part in the mill vise parallel within .005" (without using parallels). We put a Last Word indicator on it, and I won:)

That's different than what we are discussing here, but it reminded me.

Is this set like the old Silver branding set? I have the Tungsten set from back then. I'm still quite happy with it.

why doesn't some sharp guy/gal manufacture a ball template...piece of stainless steel with a 2.25 hole punched in it...for sale. For the really anal....2 holes....go and no go....gauges like they do for ammo reloaders.

I believe it. When working in that environment every day, you can get really comfortable seeing very small variations.

I had a whole thread on that and had a few made, laser cut. I let the idea die though, that was 3-4 years ago. The new ball sets are almost all universally excellent (when brand new), whether made by Aramith or Dynaspheres. I don't think there are any other manufacturers of legit phenolic resin balls?

The main differences, IMO, are how clean they stay, and the aesthetic design/colors.

Mine arrived. Nice set!

Strange thing happened when I opened mine, got this set set instead. Checked the price difference, it was pretty big. I contacted the seller and told him, said I'd be glad to keep them but that wouldn't be so good for them. After sending him a couple pictures he said that given the hassle of shipping etc. to replace them they decided to let me keep these. Told me to enjoy them. I gotta say, I wouldn't hesitate to do business when them again.

I think the best chance of getting mismatched ball sizes is when a ball is replaced from a different set because one got lost. A small ball is real easy to see in an 8 ball rack when using a Diamond wood rack or a Delta rack, when you push the balls forward you will see one in the middle somewhere that wiggles around. I don't know how much smaller it needs to be for this to happen, I never had a caliper (veneer) with me to measure.

Yup. That's what I was saying. And to state the obvious: at a tolerance of +/- 0.003" one ball to the next could vary up to 6 thousandths of an inch while still in spec.

Somebody has, and it looks like you can still get them; not steel though:

With all the talk of tolerances and weight, plus the somewhat related thread here:

It does seem (comparing visually) that the red circle Aramith cue ball is slightly smaller and plays differently than my Dynaspheres Rhodium 6 triangle cue ball. Both spin great, but the red circle seems to carry a little more pace around the table. Comparing the specs, they are extremely close...

All this talk about a new, inexpensive, and great quality set of balls and I had to order a set to try. Wife looked at me and just rolled her eyes when I told her I was getting another set. She does like pool though. Supposed to be here tomorrow but I'll be fishing for a few days.

Got my set in the mail today. Looks to be a nice set for the money. Colors are nice, some slightly darker than Aramith premiums, some lighter. Aramith on right.

First impression after a couple racks of balls, the racks seem to break better, they really open up. They shoot really nice, hard to describe, but have more of a click in the shot when striking the object ball vs the Aramith premiums. May be imagining it, but I don't think so. My Aramith Duramith set plays really nice also, plus is nicer looking.
This is a great set for the money, not sure I like that big red dot though.
Maybe that guy on AZB who bought a new Diamond table because he didn't like the leaves he was getting when breaking on his Gold Crown, should have just bought these balls and saved himself 10 grand.

I like this cue ball from them with my Bronze / Vanadium set:

Do any of you have the Cobalts? I just impulsively bought some for when I'm shooting around with buddies and want something better than old bar ball sets.
