Dynasphere Challenger Ball Set

I worked in a machine shop for 2 years as an intern when I was 20... was never formally a machinist. Anyway, I bet a guy that was a machinist I could put a part in the mill vise parallel within .005" (without using parallels). We put a Last Word indicator on it, and I won:)

That's different than what we are discussing here, but it reminded me.

why doesn't some sharp guy/gal manufacture a ball template...piece of stainless steel with a 2.25 hole punched in it...for sale. For the really anal....2 holes....go and no go....gauges like they do for ammo reloaders.

I believe it. When working in that environment every day, you can get really comfortable seeing very small variations.

I had a whole thread on that and had a few made, laser cut. I let the idea die though, that was 3-4 years ago. The new ball sets are almost all universally excellent (when brand new), whether made by Aramith or Dynaspheres. I don't think there are any other manufacturers of legit phenolic resin balls?

The main differences, IMO, are how clean they stay, and the aesthetic design/colors.

Mine arrived. Nice set!

Strange thing happened when I opened mine, got this set set instead. Checked the price difference, it was pretty big. I contacted the seller and told him, said I'd be glad to keep them but that wouldn't be so good for them. After sending him a couple pictures he said that given the hassle of shipping etc. to replace them they decided to let me keep these. Told me to enjoy them. I gotta say, I wouldn't hesitate to do business when them again.

I think the best chance of getting mismatched ball sizes is when a ball is replaced from a different set because one got lost. A small ball is real easy to see in an 8 ball rack when using a Diamond wood rack or a Delta rack, when you push the balls forward you will see one in the middle somewhere that wiggles around. I don't know how much smaller it needs to be for this to happen, I never had a caliper (veneer) with me to measure.

Yup. That's what I was saying. And to state the obvious: at a tolerance of +/- 0.003" one ball to the next could vary up to 6 thousandths of an inch while still in spec.
