Talent? No metrics. For jocks, it's a function of review. Aptitude can be gauged somewhat but here's where it fogs out. The wannabes in question are incorporated into this random trainee educational system,
first come first served.
This matters (if only for this paragraph) because all things being equal, the situations will always be unequal. The resistances will always be asequential as will the progress and most prominently the progress as compared to the individual progresses of the rest of the group.
IOW who is best prepared at the time of intersection will be the dominant subject. This will change and continue to change; much like car racing.
If the finish line is the node of reference, then the first finishers can be analyzed for "talent" as an aesthetic to marvel or argue about.
If that's too clinical, add random money; randomly distributed and asequentially of course.
