I had an interesting conversation once with an undrafted football player. He mentioned that at the "PRO" level in any sport, the participants are "genetic freaks". They are all born fast, large, smart, dedicated and practice eager. Sooo...can you practice your game into an 800+ Fargo or practice your game into a US Open Championship?

pool is hand eye co ordination.
as well as being able to see lines and smart enough to make the right paths.
without those 3 and others in abundance, you can get good or decent but never great. no matter how hard you try.

Talent? No metrics. For jocks, it's a function of review. Aptitude can be gauged somewhat but here's where it fogs out. The wannabes in question are incorporated into this random trainee educational system, first come first served.
This matters (if only for this paragraph) because all things being equal, the situations will always be unequal. The resistances will always be asequential as will the progress and most prominently the progress as compared to the individual progresses of the rest of the group.
IOW who is best prepared at the time of intersection will be the dominant subject. This will change and continue to change; much like car racing.
If the finish line is the node of reference, then the first finishers can be analyzed for "talent" as an aesthetic to marvel or argue about.
If that's too clinical, add random money; randomly distributed and asequentially of course.

I think that what goes on in someone’s head during the pool stroke has very much to do with how good you can possibly get at this game- as is the case in many sports.
Specifically with pool, the mind really needs to be totally quiet at the moments of stroke execution on every shot to be truly great (800).
You see people that are not wired this way to try every method for many years and they just cannot stay in that mental state as consistently as the very best pro players.
Fierce competition matters - practice play never shows the true player. Great at anything means that you can perform on the stage .

There used to be a lot of that in arcade video games. Kids just fused to the console - like the chips that run it.
Me, I get bored with pool. Even winning some cash. If I did damage to the other guy I don't have the heart to empty him. I always would back off and let the engagement trickle to a stop.
Hmm kind of the whole at what level (I guess Fargo is easiest to gauge now a days) will practice and dedication take you before natural talent is a must have?
I think there’s that other post about the 650 quitting their job to try their hand at the pro scene. Personally, I think anyone can get to that 500 level with practice and effort. 600 requires that natural talent to be there a little. 650 requires both and a lot of time and dedication. 700 is where if you don’t have natural talent then I’m not sure you’ll ever get there. 800 is world class and requires a life dedicated to pool. Not alot of people have the ability, resources, or time.
