this is how i learned it at first too ^^^^^^^I always thought this was an objective measurement, and not subjective. Shooting long rail to long rail, one tip of english will bring the cue one diamond up the rail. Two tips of english will bring the cue two diamonds up the rail. Three tips of english would bring the cue three diamonds up the rail. That's a pretty objective measurement in my mind. At least that's what I was taught.
Top.Which image do you consider “one tip from center”? I am getting different answers from different people.

Exactly. There are many interpretations of “tips of English” out there (not just two). See:
Only a small "patch" on the tip connects with the cue ball no matter how large your tip is.
One patch over on any side of that patch equals one tip of English and it progresses as an additional "tip" as you move over each additonal patch.
In my tests 1/3 of maximum tip offset = 1 diamond up the rail, 2/3 of maximum = 2 diamonds and maximum tip offset = 3 diamonds.I always thought this was an objective measurement, and not subjective.
If I didn't say what you said....I meant to........exactlyIn my tests 1/3 of maximum tip offset = 1 diamond up the rail, 2/3 of maximum = 2 diamonds and maximum tip offset = 3 diamonds.

What is wild is that your measurement uses every possible variable, including the table you happen to be using. In my tests 1/3 of maximum tip offset = 1 diamond up the rail, 2/3 of maximum = 2 diamonds and maximum tip offset = 3 diamonds.

Yep.I know at least three different definitions of tips of english. The problem comes in when you try to communicate to someone else. A relative newcomer tries to measure literal tips of english. Things can go wrong from the beginning because some measure one tip of english from the edge of the tip, six or seven mm from center. Others measure one tip width from center of cue ball. Before even starting to measure how many tips of english we start with two different starting points. Then some measure distance from their starting point, some measure the effect it has on the cue ball's path.
Things are perfectly unclear!!

That is correct.Actually, the size of the contact patch varies a lot with tip shape and hardness and with shot speed. For those interested, the math and physics, along with plots, showing how much it varies can be found here:
