Phillipines Open

tight affair

Neuhausen won the European Open this year, but he’s been very inconsistent. Some bad losses and early exits, including today. Definitely not consistent enough to be top 10 as the WNT rankings show. He has not done much else this year.

Stronger field than I expected. This event is fast becoming a showcase for all the unknown Filipino players who’ve got game.

Rodrigo Geronimo - Fargo 731
BEAT FRANCISCO BUSTAMANTE

Edwin Dela Cruz Gamas - Fargo 813
BEAT ALEX PAGULAYAN

Meynard Tipawan - Fargo 810
BEAT MORITZ NEWHAUSEN

Rommel Janael Santos - Fargo 774.
BEAT AJ MANAS

Saldy Galliguez - Fargo 563 (super low robustness)
BEAT LUKAS FRACASSO VERNER

Antonio Lining - Fargo 798
BEAT MAX EBERLE

Calil Ramber - Fargo 813
BET LEE VAN CORTEZA

Rodrigo Geronimo is actually Edgie Geronimo (787, 3769 games)

All we know about Saldy before this event is he played in this event last year and lost 10-2 to a 795

There are no doubt strong players in PHL not on our radar or fuzzily on our radar. But I think the degree of this sometimes gets exaggerated. For instance, of the seven players completely new to FargoRate this year, all seven lost in the first round. Sure amongst them could be a high level player who (perhaps like Saldy last year) just happened to lose a match. But these first round results are at least some evidence there is unlikely a big untapped pool of unknown 800-level players.

bergman has last year's runner up arseni sevastyanov in his next match today, likely on the tv table. after that it's probable he will face recent ranking event winner aleksa pecelj. then maybe chua or aranas. i don't think he's gonna make the MC team on points, but as a captains pick.
Tough road ahead. Justin does look comfortable though, no more jet lag.

We shall see.

Styer is married, of course, and has a life. He is a virtual shoo-in for an automatic Mosconi spot. Two players among Gorst, Woodward, Bergman and Hohmann would have to finish in the semifinals. Even then, Woodward or Bergman would have to win the event outright.

Gorst just needs to finish one round ahead of Hohmann to get the third auto bid.

Tyler was smart. He played in the UK Open to negate the need to travel to the Philippines. Woodward,Bergman and even SVB, I believe, had to play in the Philippines Open to qualify.
Skyler did his best to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, missing a straight in four ball at 9-9. Luckily for him an errant safety by Arpellida gave him a second chance. Sky crept across the finish line.

Was pulling for JB hard in that match.

He struggled early on, but pulled it out of the bag.

Was watching the stream and noticed that Emily (I think) came over for a chat at the end of the game.

We really need Thorsten to lose, so real Americans JB and Sky get the wild cards for Mosconi.

Hard to take that position when Fred has already defected to the US team

Real Americans lol. You're disgusting.

He has his citizenship and pays his taxes and doesn't commit any crimes. What more do you want him to do? He didn't choose where his parents or ancestors are from... The xenophobia is oozing out of you, please seek therapy and other resources so you don't melt.

Thorsten is actually more American than Fedor, if you want to play semantics...what do you have to say about that?

Nobody bats an eye at the Olympics when more than half of the USA participants aren't even born in the USA. Same goes for sports teams. You think every player on the Knicks was born in New York or even America?

You poor entitled, sheltered boy. Now go cry to the mods or something.

If Thorsten wins his match tomorrow, he overtakes Tyler in the rankings.

So we are likely to have a team of SVB, Gorst, Thorsten, Styer and Woodward.

Bergman probably misses out.

It would be funny if Bergman and Sky both had deep runs.

Johan might then pick them as wild cards.

Styer's decision to miss the Phillipines Open would bite him on the backside.

to finish higher than fedor?
Thorsten has a cakewalk draw so far compared to Fedor. Fedor's next matches are Banares, Roland, and the winner of Vogel/Shaw. Then if he wins all those matches, he will most likely play Roda in the quarterfinals.

But then again, if Thorsten beats Tristan Deocareza, he will most likely play FSR in the Final 16, which I can't see him winning. FSR is just too hot-handed right now.

Thorsten only needs to make the last 16 to overtake Tyler Styer.

Thorsten always gets lucky draws in these events.
I have no problem with a Thorsten being on the team, he’s a hall of famer and team USA can use new blood to change the tide of the mosconi cup
