Blown call and lack of sportsmanship

Crazy situation in what I believe is the semis of the European seniors.

Ref is terribly out of position on a jump shot and misses an obvious foul.

And what is worse, the fouling player apparently remained silent and didn’t admit the foul. Brutal mistake by the referee and such disgraceful behaviour by the fouling player.

The non-shooting player said it was a foul. The ref didn’t see it and apparently the opponent didn’t admit it, so no foul awarded. I’m basing the outcome on the FB comments.

Imagine doing this on a livestream in the European championships! So embarrassing.

On that shot, the first priority of the ref is to see if the blocking ball moves. Sad. And it's not like it just wiggled a little. Tim missed it too. Strange.

The good news is that red-shirt won the match.

Facebook videos are such dog turds. Here's a link to the original video on YouTube (1:22:54)

My pet peeve is the poor officiating I often see in major tournaments. They are quite often out of position to make a call. They seem to be afraid to be in the players line of sight. Just stand still! Poorly trained is all I can say. The Pinoy officials are almost universally good.

I'm flabbergasted!!! Offended!!!
A pool player not calling foul on himself??
OMG Mrs. Little,
The sky is falling.😉

In the YouTube video, it looks to me like the ref can see the cue ball. If so, he can see the 7 easily. I think he was just looking elsewhere.

I’m not sure if that’s better or worse if that’s the case!

I still think he’s out of position. He should be on the side or at end of the table by the 6. As Jay notes, these refs seem trained to favour bring out of sight over being in the best position to see.

If a pool player over-rides the official's call and admits to a foul, does it matter?

It doesn't in other sports. In tennis, where botched linesman calls were once common, the official's call was all that mattered. Many years ago, some players who were the beneficiaries of obvious bad calls would hit the next point into the net on purpose to even out the bad call. This would draw applause from the crowd, but with time the players preferred to just keep playing their best, as in the long run, bad calls even-out.

Perhaps pool should have a centralized officiating office (like the NHL), where any tight call can undergo video review.

I remember that well, from back in the 1970s, when I was playing tennis. It not only showed good sportsmanship, but it also made a bold statement to the umpires that they were wrong.
