Retaining Ability from Performance Enhancing Drugs

Didn't read all the takes. Probably mentioned previously. In the 80's didn't Adderall come in a white powder form sans any fentanyl crap. That mental stimulate stuff is really a new revaluation.

I am not a fan of chemicals to play. However, I will note that at one time, maybe still, US fighter pilots had to tolerate amphetamines well to qualify. Those fifteen hour or longer trips with one or more midair refuelings heading into a fight weren't done on the nach! At the least the pilots carried a little help.

There is no such thing as the "medical industry". That is a paranoid conspiracy term. You'll find used to great advantage by those who intend to harm others.
Bahahaha.

Here's what google says on the matter in case you're too sauced to even look it up....
The medical industry encompasses businesses involved in providing healthcare services, manufacturing medical equipment and pharmaceuticals, and offering medical insurance, playing a crucial role in the healthcare system

So ye, not a made up 'conspiracy theorist' term, but an actual industry like any other. Just so happens that this one's focus is medical care.

B4 Adderall, there were substances made by Pennwalt, Preludin, (LA turn arounds) Biphetamine 20, (black beauties) Ionamin, (yellow jackets) Desoxyn, (Christmas trees) and several others used primarily for weight loss. Mental health applications for treating ADD, ADHD and others didn't come into the forefront until the 90s once the DSM 3 came out listing these as actual treatable maladies. That being said, treatment of psychiatric disorders using stimulants has been around since the 40s, post WWII.
Now they are using ketamine for treatment resistant depression and PTSD in adults. VA has several studies going on at present. Ketamine, (Horse Tranq) was approved for treatment of these conditions just last year, if I'm not mistaken. These were all schedule 1 and 2 drugs classified by the FDA/DEA as having little to no beneficial use and high abuse potential. That includes heroin and fentanyl, I believe, along with all psychedelics.
There are now studies taking place utilizing these worthless drugs to treat all manner of mental illness, from PTSD to MDD. Once is enuf data is acquired they'll reevaluate for Tx potential. Idk how many of you recall reefer madness and the knee jerk response to all substances not under the overview of the feds.
The campaigns to malign many of these substances can be likened to the mcarthyism of the 50s.
Don't misconstrue. I'm not advocating drug use or any of that. I'm just suggesting not throwing the baby out with the bath water until we have sufficient evidence to the contrary. Our Gov has a tendency to gloss over things in regards to societal norms at the time.
All things in moderation is my motto. Who am I to condemn someone for their likes and dislikes simply bcuz they differ from my own??
Just bcuz I think I know what's best for others does not make it so.
I've seen both sides of
this equation and what worked for me may not work for others.
Will leave for better minds than my own to establish those parameters. Lord knows there's plenty of those willing to do so. We've got a few right 'cher!!

I normally don't recommend books, but this is an outstanding read. It's about drugs in Germany in the World Wars. Pretty insane stuff. They basically ran tanks to the Atlantic from Germany in a few days fueled with amphetamines, no sleep and a gas supply convoy. I highly recommend it, it's an engaging read even for a non-hardcore history buff.

Yeah, six years later.

One of the reasons I left this forum for five years. People giving health and even medical advice that's harmful, even killing people. Not a joke.
I side with you. I do not appreciate any reckless or illegal activity. I’m extremely anti dope. Do not promote it on AZB. No joke is right. It enhances…. Directly to the hospital, jail or the graveyard.

They still do. They carry two packets of pills. One labeled "awake" one labeled "sleep". On certain missions some carry a third packet to prevent capture alive. The third one is the one Gary Powers failed to take. We also use drugs for interrogations outside the borders of the US. The Russians had a huge system put in place by their government with laboratories, hospitals, and sports training complexes, all dedicated to doping in international competitions. A prominent celebrity that played pool, is now a podcaster, and claims he's clean is on steroids. Another, a billionair is on ketamine. The both have their excuses and both "doctor shopped". Both are abusing prescription medication.

What does any of that have to do with playing pool?

Isn’t that the sad irony, in that, we all are finite and looking to perfect whatever it is. 1000 straight in 14.1 or an extra 15 mins in bed with the old lady (not politically correct), or 16 hours in the pilots seat, we are doomed to being human.

“Perfection is something strived for but never obtained”. As they say.

It is out there so, abstain, mitigate, manage, imbibe or deny please do so responsibly.

Perfection is also subjective. Pool numbers for instance all come with aesthetic priorities in the negatives. Alarms are set at weapons and injuries. :p

Beta blockers like Propranolol can help people with BET. Benign essential tremors are those uncontrollable shaking movements in your hands and your head.

Many pool players have had their careers ended due to them. Mike Coltrain may be the most well known. A friend in Chicago won the APA singles national event twice ( Jeff Sargent ) no longer competes. A pro I know fairly well has them and is still lucky enough to play quite well. I’m unsure what he takes but we are both treated at the same Neurology Office at Duke Hospital.

I am not naming him out of respect for his right to privacy.

Myself included and without taking 80 mugs of ER Propranolol when I play my game suffers as well. I have no doubt that without the Beta blockers I’d play so poorly I’d probably quit.

Some folks get them and it’s bad very fast, some get them and they stabilize at a relatively low rate and can still play very well.

Mine are that way and I feel very fortunate to go out and hang at the pool hall, chat with guys and play some pool.
They may not fall under the heading of performance enhancing drugs but they do work for some folks and I’ve never felt like I was cheating anyone by taking them as prescribed.

Reverting back to pre-steroid size does not happen over night. It takes time.

The commentator to the "Titan Games" is a steroid user, but during the show consistently wears a baggy jacket or something to cover his upper body.

He definitely has the mass and size but the definition is not competition bodybuilder or hollywood ready.

Using steroids helps the recovery of muscles, it doesn't mean the day you stop using you lose all your gains go back to pre-steroid levels instantly.

The the latent effects of adderall in an off cycle, may have lingering substances or neuro connections.
He was absolutly right. RIP 🙏🏼

I used PED’s for 20 years. You wouldn’t know by looking at me now, the muscle memory is there, the gains(muscle mass) were real but took years to fade away when I stopped the gym (I trained after I sopped, my back is what took me out of the gym).

I never abused the Roids, never had any side effects or problems. However I know plenty of guys who died or had serious problems from too much PED’s. That’s a slippery slope-worse than Rec drugs(I’ve never tried). But I’ve watched

Justin was spot on here, I miss him, I miss the PED’s , life changes…..😕

Anyways back to a 7 year old thread!

I was prescribed beta blockers for medical reasons and hated them. They left me feeling flat-footed and a little bit dull. Some use them to take the edge off their nerves but without a little edge I can't compete at my best. A fellow pistol competitor said he always took half an aspirin before competing to calm down a little. He asked if I thought that was cheating. I suspect a cigarette smoker gets more out of a butt or two so I had no problem with his half an aspirin. I raced with a guy that I learned later always smoked half a joint before racing. That just seemed dumb, he handicapped himself.

Sadly, you are incorrect. Rx drugs, engineered with intent, are nothing like caffeine- at least not in normally indigestible forms.
Yeah I smashed 2 Red Bulls and a 5 hour energy one time before playing. Played like shit and it felt like my hair was growing...

I tried several best blockers and settled on Propranolol. Hope you found another way to get relief for your medical issue.

All our chemistry is different and reacts in ways that can be less than predictable.

My Mom was a tool. She was prescribed meds for depression so she took one and stopped. Said it did not work.. lol

Speaking of mom's, my high school running buddy's mom got some diet pills. She was through cleaning the house by eight AM, polishing silver, climbing walls. Three days and she quit taking them. My friend started!(grin)

If I'm not mistaken, the Germans developed methamphetamine first specifically for use during the wars. They also developed Methadone as a pain reliever. We all know where that led.

Adderall is a combo of dextroamphetamine/amphetamine salts. Supposed to have zero addiction potential in those taking it by Rx for stated illness.
It varies from Meth by not crossing the blood/brain barrier.
With meth, this is instantaneous. All the euphoric chem precursors rush into the bloodstream. Rebound effect causes increase and frequency in dosage, leading to rapid addiction.

Beta blockers are prescribed to half the population over 65 in this country. Anyone w heart probs can attest to that. They don't help me on the table. There is no help for me on the table anymore.😂 Once the hand/eye goes south, the rest goes tumbling after.

They have a lowering effect on blood pressure and help maintain normal sinus rhythm I believe. There's a definite 'Down' to them.
