BJ is spot on. Bar tables are for unskilled drunks to argue over that have no clue how to play pool. Outside of a bar they are a joke.

I’ve been outspoken about them forever. Feel like a loser even playing on them.

Undoubtedly the kiddie pool crowd for the APA will be along to say this and that about how great they are. I bet they can’t wait for the next downsizing to a 3’ x 5’ table with six inch corner pockets. Yes that will be marvelous.

One night I played for the sales agreement on my business and the commercial property it sat on. One game of barbox eightball. The game was hard enough and the pockets tight enough it took twenty or thirty minutes to play that game on a Valley table.

I agreed with your sentiments until you went awry with the golf analogy. Playing from the tips on a golf course is reflective of your ability to hit fairways and with length. The par rating doesn’t change but the scores sure reflect it anyway. It is a much more difficult game and amateurs less than a 12 handicap have no business playing from the back tees since it only leads to slower pace of play that punishes the other players on the course behind.

Playing from the back tees is just the opposite of what you described. The regular tee boxes are meant for the mortals but the back tees are for better players. Now if you wrote playing on 10’ tables was the hallmark of a strong pool player, that makes sense. 9’ tables are for the more ambitious players whereas 7’ are for socialized pool leagues and better suited for lower ranked pool players, that also makes sense. But you don’t want a 20 handicap playing in the group in front of you hitting from the back tees or be prepared for some some slow pace of play that will drive you crazy.

He is talking about players of both games being looked down upon because they don't play the "big" table or from the "tips."

When i was playing a lot in 80's-'90's if you didn't play on bb's you didn't make any money. Period. These so called 'purists' that keep knocking bb's are idiots. In a LOT of places in this country barboxes ARE POOL. I'd love for someone to go tell Matlock/Buddy/Keith/Shuput/etc that they weren't real players.

I don’t disagree with you but it does not change my feelings about peewee pool tables.

I am spoiled though because I live in NC. Don’t know of any bar boxes anywhere here at least in pool halls.

uh, bar boxes are in bars.

smaller real pool tables made by the likes of diamond are in both pool rooms and some bars.
they are for league players and just for fun players that actually want the slightly mis hit balls to have a chance to fall.
and in bars for the drunks and non players to have something to do for fun.

Actually named N. Hotel St. it was the red light district of Honolulu then.

Had a wonderful chat with Rodney Morris about it. He had heard stories like mine before and would have loved to be there then.

Played on barboxes against servicemen from Viet Nam on R&R.
It was all good fun playing for a few bucks a game once it got up to five bucks a game it got real.

I was the skinny hippie kid they couldn’t beat. Lots of fun and able to make a quick couple hundred a day. Split with the bar 50/50 it was a win win.

The service guys had fun, the bar made money, I made money and no
one got hurt I ever saw..

Back then everyone had money to burn, good times!!!

Bar boxes are not for me as far as playing pool goes and for pro level players it’s almost a joke, a sad one at that…

Why can't both tables be acceptable in the game of pool? To me they both pose situations that are easier for me and harder for me. Trying to work the cue ball around the table in a delicate fashion is more demanding of a 7 ft table as opposed to a 9-ft table where there is more open space. Although, shots are more difficult because of their length and pocket size on 9 ft tables. They both offer pluses and minuses that are good for your game. Although, if I had my choice, I would play my league play on 9-ft tables. If you want to make delicate shots more necessary on 9 ft tables, play one pocket.

I get the point that he's trying to make, but it's not the whole story. You might as well blame badminton and pickleball for not turning out professional tennis players--and that is also with the assumption that (some) players of the two former games are training to become tennis pros.

still is. i know guys that play Fargo bb events all the time. they knock down 30k a year in their spare time. both work and play weekend events.

I look at bar tables as being the gateway drug to the game, same way that putt-putt and Top Golf are gateway drugs to golf. I think we need to figure out a way to get people in advancing from the gateway drug to the bigger tables.

It's much easier/economical for a pool hall to cater to a 30 team league with 7 ft tables than 9 ft tables. I have played in 30-40 team leagues.

Max is 100% correct, without 9' tables people cannot advance to a professional level. Or even a top regional player.

But, there is nothing wrong with people that just want to jab the balls around a 7' table.

Another, better question is who would really want their kid to become a professional pool player? I would so much rather raise a DR. Dave...

Just a thought but I don’t see many of the people coming into the pool hall I mostly play in (and they only have 2 9’ers out of 24 tables) using cash. It seems debit cards and ‘tap’ pay/phones are the norm. Very few have a couple, if any, C-notes on them.

Again, just a thought…cash is king.

yes tom is right.

larger pool rooms have learned they make more money off the leagues on small tables which they can fit more of.
and the players eat and drink.

and a minor amount but some gravitate to the big tables later on if they want more than just league play.

most play wiffle ball then soft ball before they ever swing at a hard ball.
