Sofia Mast "retiring?" The state of American pool

Sounds like Sofia Mast is making culinary school her #1 priority, come August. She "hopes" be be able to keep playing pool. She also has an excellent argument as being the #1 American-born woman player.

A couple months ago, I saw a post from her requesting donations/support during her streams. I know she has sponsorships. As well, culinary school graduates are notoriously poorly paid. If the (arguably) best female player born in the US can't make a reasonable living at this game, then there's no real hope for US women to be competitive.

Being the best 'US born woman player' doesn't mean diddly squat. There's NO WAY at her level to make much, if any, of a career playing pro pool. There's probably over 100 in asia alone that will BBQ her playing anything. Yes, culinary grads don't make much starting out but she'll make more 'consistent' income doing that than chasing a pool dream. She can still play a lot of tournaments and do the cook thing too. Probably make pretty decent combined income.

...what if she just really enjoys food culture, and cooking?

Also, she's relatively unknown. She can go hustle the hell out of some pool when her and her classmates go out for drinks.
Yep. IMO she's making a very smart move. I've seen her play on streams and yes she has some game but in no way is it ready for world class play. The only way pool 'might' work is if she was 100% staked as in NO money out-of-pocket to go do battle.

That's the point.

If someone can be #1 and still have culinary school as a better financial option, then women's pro pool in this country is in a very sad state. How can it attract potential players if there's no future in it?

Smart.... writings on the wall.
I did it solid 89-91, two weeks out two weeks at home, was not for me with two girls/wife/house payments, and costs of the road.
In my traveling yrs, I preferred to find a city I liked, get a job bartending join life rent a room and live.
Loved Louisiana so much, lived their twice, one of my times, got a job working on the Tug Boats.

Good for her! Wish her lots of success. If you’re a talented chef the sky is the limit. A childhood friend became a chef and now his son has followed in his footsteps.

He graduated from culinary school then went to Italy for four years of learning the Italian Med Diet. He now owns Chickadee in Boston.

He is a top teir chef and has a very successful restaurant. My daughter to a business associate from London to Chickadee and she was totally shocked. She is an uber wealthy foodie and a regular at Cor in London. They even have personalized napkins with their initials on them! Status in Cor is very booogie!!

Anyone in Beantown take a trip to Chickadee you will be happy you did!

Hope in time Sofia will be successful restaurant business is a tough racket!

I feel its a great move and opportunity. She will now have many more options to make a great life.
Sofia seems like a Bright kid, there are big chances to go places in the culinary world.
She would have options in both professions now.
Go Sofia, I have enjoyed watching you play pool and hope to see you in the foodie world.

Happy 18th birthday!

I will miss seeing her in tournament play scrapping her way upwards against the ten or so elite women who show up regularly. And I'll miss the mini-drama of seeing whether she or Savannah will make it into that top tier. But she's making the right decision and she's young enough to come back if she doesn't like the food service biz. Good luck, Sofia!

This is sad.

We really need more sponsors in pool.

I really don't get why professional pool can't get gambling companies interested.
Been this way with the womans for ever, just don't have the market for their product, plus most women are not hard core road warriors that grew up with the likes of men in bars/poolrooms and such.
Can only think of a couple USA women that did this successfully/living in the trenches but if they did it was on bar tables, where men were easy pickin's.

I must admit this is the first I've heard of her , I wish her nothing but the best in whatever path she chooses !
I feel she can with a very strong work ethic can be successful as a chef and a pool player both can be done its time management granted it won't be easy but its doable .

Who knows she could meet a well to do customer in the restaurant who may offer to back her pool game in tournaments , stranger thing has happened !
Stay focused and reach for the stars young lady !!!!!
