Definition of tips of English

Which is one tip of English

  • A. Single red line, half tip diameter from center, but left edge of tip is touching center.

  • B. Two red lines, full tip diameter from center.

Does it really matter how others perceive tips of english?? It seems to me that the important thing is that you know what each tip of english is for your own reference and that you can apply it consistently.
 
which in essence is just learning where to place the tip for the amount of english you want.

if you cant do that then best you can do is a wide area position.

but for kicking especially it is paramount to know how much english is needed for the angle off the rail you need to put on.
 
I always thought this was an objective measurement, and not subjective. Shooting long rail to long rail, one tip of english will bring the cue one diamond up the rail. Two tips of english will bring the cue two diamonds up the rail. Three tips of english would bring the cue three diamonds up the rail. That's a pretty objective measurement in my mind. At least that's what I was taught.

I've been asked by a few to add an option to the DigiBall app to show "tips" of English based on the width of the users tip. I've been against doing so and I am using this thread to show that not only does "tips from center" carry two variables with the definition, but that people don't even agree on how to reference it.

The DigiBall reports the tip contact point (where the actual force happens) as a percentage of ball radius from center (acronym PFC). The range is 0% to about 55%. It is independent of tip diameter, tip curvature and ball diameter. This way there will be no more subjectiveness to the measurement and people can have conversations without the fog.

those diagrams are easy to follow if you cant you never will get past banger stage. every great player uses them.
you can see them going over them when they take a break.

the only real adjustments to make when using english , is how hard your tip is as it grabs more if soft and puts more english on the ball. and if you have a whippy shaft it will do the same. as well as gripping your cue too tightly will lesson your englsih on the ball to almost nothing.

i am not sure which brands of chalk change your english so beware of some of them.

and understanding how much extra power a carbon fibre shaft adds to your shot. so your speed control has to be tempered way back from using an out dated wood shaft.

One patch over on any side of that patch equals one tip of English and it progresses as an additional "tip" as you move over each additonal patch.
 
What about the size of the tip? Is 1 tip equal to 1 tip?

(Exaggeration for effect)......If I have a 1mm tip vs a 10mm tip....struck in the same spot (one tip for the 10mm tip)....does that mean for the 1mm tip I just put on 10 tips of english?

In my tests 1/3 of maximum tip offset = 1 diamond up the rail, 2/3 of maximum = 2 diamonds and maximum tip offset = 3 diamonds.

What is wild is that your measurement uses every possible variable, including the table you happen to be using.

But it isn't your fault... we really have no way to talk about where exactly on the cue ball a specific shot should be hit WITHOUT referring to the outcome, unless we strictly talk about tip contact point, and Percent From Center.

Things can go wrong from the beginning because some measure one tip of english from the edge of the tip, six or seven mm from center. Others measure one tip width from center of cue ball. Before even starting to measure how many tips of english we start with two different starting points. Then some measure distance from their starting point, some measure the effect it has on the cue ball's path.

Things are perfectly unclear!!

Yep.

And how do you instruct someone where to hit the ball using words? What if the student's concept of center ball is off to the left or right? How do you then tell if they did hit where they intended to, without looking at the outcome of the shot (which could have separate aiming and visualization issues)?

How do you isolate the one and only single split-second event you as a player physically have over the game, and put it into language everyone can understand?

Houses can still be built with strings, but wouldn't a measuring tape make it easier?

That is correct.

I was trying to convey that only a small portion of the tip actually touches the cue ball.

Some people seem to think the whole surface of the tip hits it.

I have played long enough to know which portion of my tip connects with the cue ball when using English.
 
its like using physics to explain how to walk. or arguing how to explain walking to someone,

its chemistry
, the chemistry of your brain
when you learn through experimentation and repetition, then that's when you know just how to do it.
and can do it without making costly mistakes.
