You are playing cue ball foul only. What is the rule for each situation:
1. You hit the cue ball. Nothing goes but you move a ball.
2. You hit the cue ball, nothing goes but you move 2 balls.
3. You hit the cue ball, nothing goes but you move a ball and that ball goes in a pocket. That pocket is not of either player.

1 did ball then hit rail?
2 did Any ball then contact a rail
3 pocketed ball spots
The cue ball and the object ball were hit correctly and no foul committed by either ball. The questions concerned the ball and balls that inadvertently were moved when the player stroked the cue ball.

I believe by "move a ball" he means with your hand or the side of your cue, etc.

1. opponent puts the disturbed ball back where (he thinks) it was
2. foul - and #1 applies as well
3. haven't seen that happen but seems like #1 applies

And for 1 and 3, if a (legally) moving ball comes back to where the (illegally) moved ball was - or is - that's a foul.

But if he moves a ball after the stroke and that balls drop into a pocket ( not his or your pocket) do you spot that ball in the spot and owes a ball?

lol, if he pockets a ball thataway I would compliment him on his stroke.

Right, good point. The moral? Don't move the freaking balls.

And play all ball fouls like god intended. In which case it's a foul if you touch/move any ball. And the other guy still has the option to restore.

Yeah, I realize almost nobody plays one pocket w/all ball fouls.

when the guy pocket that ball after his stroke and pocket the ball, that was the first time that I have seen that. My instinct told me to spot the ball in the spot like you would if you pocket a ball in any pocket that is not intended.

You are playing cue ball foul only. What is the rule for each situation:

2. You hit the cue ball, nothing goes but you move 2 balls.
3. You hit the cue ball, nothing goes but you move a ball and that ball goes in a pocket. That pocket is not of either player.
Typically with these rules the opponent would replace the moved ball (or not) in #1. Two or more balls moved was a foul. Ball in the pocket refer back to #1.

correct jay. those tend to be the current rules used. and the right way to play.

and just to add each pool room or player may have a little variation of those, and need to have it explained or an independent third party rule.

in a tournament it's clear.

I think the rules on onepocket.org include a section for cue ball fouls only. I think you need to go by those rules, as they are the rules used by a lot of players.

The CSI rules for one pocket may also allow cue ball fouls only. They have a pretty good discussion of what to do in "cue ball fouls only" situations.

If you're just learning the rules of the game, I think it really, really helps to read through the rules at least once. In this case, I think it's best to read through both of the rule sets mentioned above.

But also, if there is already a one pocket community in your area, you need to find out how they handle various situations. Some of the rules have changed and some people play by the old rules.
