Kielwood shafts snapping during turning, strange oscillation.. can't seem to figure it out.

This link explains it pretty well: https://engmachineshop.wustl.edu/people/climb-milling-vs-conventional-milling/ While they touch briefly on backlash, what they don't explain is what can happen in a machine that has a significant amount of backlash. When climb cutting the cutter can pull the...

Opinions regarding a former top pro playing in and dominating a Poolroom‘s weekly handicapped tournament?

I always wondered where the sense of accomplishment came from when winning a handicapped event. It's like me beating Usain Bolt in the 100 after drugging him and breaking his ankles. I winned!

Using Elforyn to plug Radial Shaft?

Doesn't your cuemaker already have a material he prefers for plugging shafts? If so, don't tell him what to use. If not, find a different cuemaker...and then don't tell that guy what to use.

Opinions regarding a former top pro playing in and dominating a Poolroom‘s weekly handicapped tournament?

Everyone who complains about a guy winning all the time will find something else to complain about after you ban him.

Kielwood shafts snapping during turning, strange oscillation.. can't seem to figure it out.

I pull my shafts between centers with very slight tension. I use a collet in the headstock and a live Jacob's in the tail. Faster cutter speed is going to produce lower chip load. Harmonics can be caused by the combination of the turning frequency and router speed.

Shafts that look good --- Hsunami, JT & McDermott ---Got others?

I like a shaft that has a nice, glossy, slightly gray look. It means that it has been well used, but taken care of. Things that suck don't get used... And stay looking new. As the John Prine song goes, '...things that work, things that hold up, things you don't hang on the wall...'. I never...

    Dead Blow Cue

Sounds like Shake Weight missed their big opportunity to put their mechanism in a cue and not revolutionize pool in the same way they didn't revolutionize working out.

    Dead Blow Cue

Not really. Scientists and engineers have no moral or academic obligation to report or extensively test abject failures, unless those failures can cause grievous damage or injury. My test on my shot filled cue was hitting some shots. It sucked, it felt horrible, it was noisy. There, that is...

    Dead Blow Cue

Let's get something straight: A cue filled with moving weight/shot will not just stop when it hits the cueball. That isn't what a deadblow hammer does either. The purpose of a deadblow hammer is to reduce the shock of the impact. If the object hit by the hammer is able to move, it will...

    Dead Blow Cue

Read about SMACWrap and you'll find it is nothing like a dead blow hammer. It is thin vibration damping material used between layers of cf. It is much more like the soundproofing in your car than a dead blow hammer.

    Cue value, Masonh

Zapow, you add the JD blank and a that goes well above 450.

    Cue value, Masonh

He said it was a MasonH. He probably bought it new from Mason. Pretty well verified. It looks like Mason's work and it looks like a Davis blank. Mason had a bit of following on AZ around the time the cue was made. Around that time, a Davis FS blank was probably about 350 with those...

    Dead Blow Cue

How hard are you pounding things into your vise? I have never used more than a 12oz deadblow on my vise and I don't swing it as hard as I swing my cue on a break. Not all deadblow hammers are soft faced. Not all soft faced hammers are deadblow.

    Dead Blow Cue

This is turning about as dumb as the 'bullets are pointy, my to should be pointy' thread. Just because something exists and works well for other endeavors doesn't mean it will be good for a cue. Cf, dead blow, astrolube, you can try it all, but I won't believe any of it until I see valid testing.

    Dead Blow Cue

The advantage of a deadblow hammer or mallet is in the fact that they are used to hit things that don't move much. Instead of the hard hammer bouncing off the heavy/immovable item, the impact is transferred to the hit object over a longer duration of time. Think of it as the same as a...

Are you sure it's pinned and not just a machining relic from a crappy parting operation?

    Etiquette question

True, most state that it is a foul if one of the moved balls contacts the cueball. I have more problem with this rule than any other, mainly because the moved ball might not contact the cueball, but what if the cueball would have hit the ball in its original position? Both situations affect...

    Etiquette question

You were 100% right. I've never heard of a tourney that doesn't call that a foul since the cueball was in play. You could have told him that you figured he wanted them there since he was the one who moved them.
