Does replacing a tenon affect playability?

Maple vs. LBM I satisfied my own curiosity, and here’s what I came up with: In order to get useable data, I made a “super ferrule” of five 13mm, 1.25” LBM ferrules glued in a line on a maple dowel made from an old shaft. I had to turn the “super ferrule” down a little in order to get a smooth...

    Counting inlays

I don't count ring segments as inlays. Granted, when you make the ring billet you are inlaying veneers and/or thicker strips of material into another material. But, if you count all those ring segments as individual inlays, you're artificially increasing the number of inlays in the cue...

Does replacing a tenon affect playability?

I have no problem with people trying different things. Some new things work, some don't. That "airplane" thingy turned out pretty good! Just to satisfy my own curiosity, I'll weight the two (ferrule vs maple) to find out the difference. Maybe I am totally wrong.

Does replacing a tenon affect playability?

Sorry to hijack the thread, but as has been said on here time and time again, some players get waaaaaay too worried about tiny details that no human being is ever going to possibly notice. For example, regarding the weight difference between a plastic ferrule and maple: weight a ferrule (with...

    who uses a taig mill

What do you have? - cad/cam software - mill type - mill controlling software Milling is a relatively easy process (inlays, custom ring billets, etc.) once you get the basics. Of course, the devil is in the details! I'd be willing to get you moving in the right direction.

Radial joint protector pins from Atlas

No, it's not you. I've been having the same problem with the last few batches of Radial joint protector pins I bought from Atlas, too. (Yes, they are Radial thread, not some other odd-ball thread.) If you look closely at the first thread on the flat side (the side you glue into the Radial...

    Samsara tip on phenolic

Here's what I discovered: If the phenolic ferrule is capped, the tip will pop off no matter what scoring, scratching or sanding method you use to prepare the tip and ferrule. Expose the wooden tenon and the tip will stay put.

    Nationals in Vegas

End of May? So, you're going to VNEA? Was there last year. Unfortunately, there were only about 10 vendors, that includes the repair booths. Kinda sparse. IMHO, the BCAPL Nat'ls are way better on a number of levels including vendors. They have vendors lining the entire perimeter of the main...

Tips on Keeping Chuck Jaws Clean?

After cleaning the screw threads and jaws on my lathe chuck for what seems like the hundredth time this year, I was wondering if anyone has a method for keeping the chuck threads clean for an extended period of time. I'm not a noob, so I don't need the run-of-the-mill, smart ass answers, such...

    Schon Cue ID

Yeah, I saw the cues in the R series. They're similar. I, too, was thinking probably a custom job. I'll have to call Schon Cues and see if they got my emails. Thanks again!

    Schon Cue ID

I'm trying to ID an old Schon for a friend. I've sent pictures via email to Schon, but no response. I did a Google search on "old Schon" and checked out darn near every page. I even looked in the Blue Book of Cues. I just can't find this cue anywhere. Looking for: model #, original price...

    Uni-loc collar help?

Any collar will work - it doesn't matter what pin is installed. The Uni-Loc QR pin is just like any other pin, in that the pin makes it possible for two pieces to be screwed together as one. The only two thing that different collar materials make is (1) looks, and (2) feel of the hit. The...

    Durameter question

I'll use darn near any excuse to buy a new tool, but why in the heck would you need a durometer? Are you going to test the hardness of each tip before you install it? Seems a bit overkill to me. Almost every tip on the market already has a hardness rating. Of course you can't take their posted...

    Gaboon vs "regular" Ebony

Yes, Gaboon Ebony is very nice and black (why's it called Gaboon ebony when it comes from the African country Gabon?). Anyway, also check out African Blackwood. Different species all together. I've had some pieces so jet black, they look like plastic.

    tip hardness chart.

I searched the internet last year and scribbled down every tip hardness I could find, then compiled this Tip Hardness Chart.

    taper size and 5/16x14

No replies after 4 days?!? Hmm, I wonder why? What the heck. I'll jump in with my two cents worth! Asking what taper and joint pin to get is like asking what color wrap is best. Everyone has their personal favorite, so it's kind of a silly question. Instead, you should play...

    Coring

Cue makers use maple because it's strong yet inexpensive. Laminated maple dowels are (supposed to be) even stronger. I've used lam dowels. They're just fine. I personally think straight grain maple is just as good and is a little cheaper. But you're saying this guy is using hybrid laminated...

    what kind of wood?

Yep. But that's when you gotta put on your salesman hat. Tell him to store and treasure his grampa's cue, and play with the cue you're gonna make for him!

    Are you insulted ?????

Insulted if: They use an after market shaft? Nope. Abuse the cue? Nope. Break the cue? Nope. Sell the cue? Nope. Why not? It's their cue. They bought it, they can do whatever they want with it. I hope they love it, use it every day, show it off, and get me more business. But once it's out of my...

    Joint pin

Been a while since I've worked on one, but I'm pretty sure they're 3/8-16. Same tap as Atlas weight bolts.
