many have the elbow more towards the back because they started to play at a very young age and they couldn't reach the table very well with a perpendicular arm.

I could be wrong but I think also the table has no directional cloth ( just like pool)... many players struggled with cueball controll because of the different reactions of the cloth.

if you are a bad shotmaker you probably lack confidence on every shot. I know I'm a pretty bad shotmaker and I cinch more shot than I should... I think before thinking about perfect position you should reach a pretty decent level of shotmaking.

I started playing with a pool stance, then I switched to a snooker stance and now I'm much more confident on the delivery of the cue. But sometime as I said it has some disadvantage.

I had eye surgery a month ago and since then I'm playing much better, especially on long shots. I was not saying you are hitting off-center because bad eyesight, but because bad eye alignment.
