    Ivory? Cue ball

Density 1.83 Hi, For 6.3 oz and 2.25 inch diameter I get, if I did the math correctly, a density of 1.83. Within measurement error and natural variation, that is identical to ivory at a nominal 1.85, or 1.85 grams per cubic centimeter (g/cc). Not a formal proof, but as the lawyers would state...

    Ivory? Cue ball

Non-destructive test Hi again, The best non-destructive test technique is x-ray fluorescence in which the constituent elements are excited by an x-ray beam. In a series of electron orbital events, each element will re-radiate characteristic x-rays of unique and known energy. Detecting these...

    Ivory? Cue ball

Hi, Almost certainly ivory. But I'd rather hold it to decide. No one, to my knowledge, has come up with a synthetic that reproduces the Schreger lines characteristic of elephant and mammoth ivory. The elephant Schreger lines are at >115 degree angle, as seen in these balls. Mammoth at 90...

One of the first two piece cues ever made! LOL!

Historical, or is that hysterical, cue seller Hi, Ignorance - No. His feedback indicates that he sold a Viking cue at some time over a year ago. Oh, wait. Maybe that was a cue used by the Vikings... Take care, Nick

    Klingon 3-Cushion

Hi, Behind the plate for the Cubs, Kling got to see many a double play - his infield was famed for Tinker to Evers to Chance. I am lucky to have one his eponymous 5x10 tables in my garage. Take care, Nick

US Ivory Ban ( New )

Poor mammoths I hope they include mammoth ivory in these bans - otherwise those poor creatures could go extinct.

    Rambow... last blood..67-68

Rambow 1968??? Hi, Mr. Rambow passed away in 1967, so this is not likely a 1968 Rambow cue. I further would suggest that it might not be a Rambow cue at all, but perhaps a Bihun. The particular style of signature curlicue can be seen on a Bihun signature. If it is a Bihun, that would...

Billiards from the year 1911, playing 18.2?

Been there.... In my youth balkline games were still played by some of the "older" fellows. I learned a bit from one of those gents. Exquisitely tough game. A "gather shot" might require driving the first hit object ball to go around the table while the cue ball gentlycontacted the second...

    Physics question

Rubber butt cap? Hi, Did the cue have a rubber butt cap, or was it the old style (think Hoppe Pro)? If old style, less friction with floor and the cue would begin to slide along horizontally, with increasing horizontal motion as the the cue reached 45 degrees. Oh, and was the flooring a rug...

    Damn Kling Table

Catcher Kling Hi, Kling was a catcher, not a pitcher. And, yes, I have a 5x10 Kling to back that up. As a catcher he had a great view of the double play wonders in his infield, immortalized in poem: These are the saddest of possible words: “Tinker to Evers to Chance” Take care, Nick

    Rare antique custom cue...

Reversed? Hi, Possible that a butt pin got stuck in the shaft and what you see is the root of the pin. I've corrected that on 3 vintage cues. Wrap some rubber around the exposed pin and use a vise grip to unscrew it from shaft. See what you get.... Take care, Nick

    The True Record Hi Run

Slow is the way go Hi, Lots of discussion earlier about the fast cloth of today as an advantage to high runs. HUH? Does anyone out there remember how to play 14.1??? For straight pool you WANT SLOW CLOTH, and slow cushions as well, so that you can KILL THE CUE BALL. That's the apparently...

    Break cloth

Rack apron Hi, Most of you are too young to remember when some rooms had rack aprons, a triangle of cloth, one edge of which was attached to one edge of the rack. You laid the apron on the table first, near the foot rail, then maneuvered the rack on top of it (the cloth was slightly larger than...

    Screw-on tips?

Frankly.... Hi, Thanks for the advice on screw-ons. I had these 2 old cues with screw-on ferrules-with-tips. Now I realize that they were screwing up my game. So I trashed them. And those 2 old Paradise cues looked screwy anyway, compared to modern cues. Take care, Nick
