Hightower Lathe Leadscrew power feed video

A couple of people asked me about the leadscrew power feed on Chris' lathe. This last time, instead of trying to explain it all again, I decided to make a very quick, of the cuff video showing how it works. I hope it answers some questions about the "new" system...

    MOSCONI CUP LIVE (Score Updates)

I just watched the end of the last match. I haven't been following this at all. Shane really doesn't seem into it at all. I know that look. It's the same look you have on your face when you're stuck in a meeting you don't want to be in. Hope everything's OK with him.

    Tip dresser/tapper

If you're rambunctious with it you can cause layers to delaminate. So I've heard, anyhow.

What innovation had made the biggest impact in pool today?

Honestly, I don't really feel like the game has changed significantly since we moved away from clay/ivory balls. I guess just having the internet so it's easy to watch pros online and learn from them, especially for strategy games like 14.1.

    Tip shape

With layered tips, I maintain a dime radius at all times. The ones I prefer seem to glaze over a lot anyhow, so I just gently touch it up two or three times a session, it's always a dime and always holds chalk. For solid tips, I shape it to a dime and then leave it alone until it flattens out...

Recent Purchase - Le Pro Tips

I really like ultraskins too. It's the only layered tip I actually like, in fact. That's what I was using before I starting fiddling around with the Le Pros again.

Recent Purchase - Le Pro Tips

One other thing I'll say is that now that I'm doing tips on a lathe, it's immediately obvious which ones are good and which ones aren't as soon as you start to cut. The good ones cut beautifully. The not so good ones tear a little. The really crappy ones just come apart like an accordion. When i...

OB chalk is noticeably smaller than other chalks...

You can probably just wrap it with a couple of layers of masking tape to thicken it up a bit.

    Leaving cue ball position long....

I used to go long too, mainly because I didn't want to fall short. LOL...ok, don't laugh. It made sense to me at the time. I fixed 90% of it by looking for routes where speed control isn't so critical. I learned to use the cushions and natural angles to get where I need to go, so going long or...

Recent Purchase - Le Pro Tips

What I'm finding I really like about Le Pros (and maybe all solid leather tips) is that they seem to play harder the harder you stroke. Seems like it's much softer if you stroke softly, but if you hit hard it seems like the tip plays pretty hard. Best of all worlds kind of thing. I wonder if...

    Pre flag Masters Chalk

I played someone on Monday that brought Pre-Flag with him. I had my normal Master chalk. He's just using it because he bought a gross some time ago. We both had our chalk on the table. Every time I happened to pick up his I knew it immediately. It was much harder and didn't make as much of a...

Finally ready to make an attempt at turning my first cue

FWIW, for my first cue I did exactly the opposite of most of the advice here. I built something from scratch, out of maple w/Aegis and Phenolic ringwork (and some ebony too, because I didn't have the right size phenolic but did have some ebony I could use), A joint, etc. No points or inlays...

    House cues on Hightower lathe

Thanks, Chris. I don't know why I didn't think of that. Seems obvious now. That may actually be what I end up doing. If I end up doing a lot more of this work for some reason, I'll just pickup the steady rest with the chuck in it.

Recent Purchase - Le Pro Tips

FWIW, now that I've done a number of these, my success rate has been just about 50%. Honestly, that's much better than I'd expected, though nowhere near as good as Freddie's. I also noticed that most of them burnish lighter than the old ones, but some of them are dark like the old ones. Hit or...

    McDermott Stinger Breaking shaft?

I have one. It's fine as a break cue. Simple and cheap. I don't think it's a great jump cue, to be honest...or I should say there are better ones, anyhow. As far as breaking, it breaks about as well as any other break cue, best I can tell. Personally, I don't really care for the 13.25mm tip...

    Conversation with a Chess Player?

Currently working my way through the tournament they just had in St. Louis (shhhh....no one tell me who won!). Naka just got his butt handed to him by Topalov. Nice to see Yasser and Garry joking around and getting along. I thought they hated each other. Garry has a book coming out in the...

    House cues on Hightower lathe

You mean the one with the felt in it? I'd never though of that. I figured that it would have a lot of run out. I'll give that a try too. Thanks!

    House cues on Hightower lathe

Well, that's pretty straight forward. I had this image in my head that the butt end would just flop around like crazy because there's a lot of unsupported length. OK...I'll give it a try! Thanks, KJ.

    House cues on Hightower lathe

I have a deluxe lathe, and I'm curious about something. A friend of mine has a bunch of house cues that need tips. I'm happy to do it for him, and I could just do it by hand, but I'd like to do it on the lathe. I'm wondering what the best technique for doing this is? In other words, that's the...

Can someone explain shot to me?

I knew SOMEONE was joking. I thought it may have been one of those things where he turned to the crowd and said, "Dat's exactly how I planned it. Puuurrrrfect", the way only Mike can do it. :)
