    major slump

Can't make a ball to save my life playing 14.1. I've been playing LOUSY straight pool for weeks. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong but it feels like it's in my head. I can actually visualize myself missing simple shots, and sure enough I miss them. I don't think I ran more than 5 or 10 balls...

    McDermott Stinger NG01

I'll post some pictures of the cue when I'm in my shop later today. It's very clean, I bought it new about a year ago, and I doubt I've broken with it more than 30 times (I mostly play straight pool). It's got a Samsara tip. Everyone who's tried it seems to love it...I used to love it, but my...

OLD Rockland Country pool hall...help remembering!

Here's something that's been driving me nuts. There used to be a pool hall in Rockland County, NY. I think it was in Nanuet (or right near Nanuet, anyhow). I believe it was on Rte. 59, a bit past the mall. So if you come out of the mall and make a left on 59, then head up the hill, it was up...

get in stroke before a match

It usually takes me an hour or two to get dialed in. By the end of the night, I'm feeling very confident and precise, but I usually start off very shaky. Specifically, my stroke just doesn't feel solid and straight. Any suggestions for a warm up to get loose quickly? I feel like it's just a...

Anyone shoot with just one or two cues for many years?

Just curious about this. Here's my story. Back when I was a young teen...maybe 13 or so, my dad got me my first cue: A cheap piece of crap Cue Ball Kelly cue. I think we paid $50 or $75 for it, and that's probably overpriced. I've been using it as a practice cue on my new cue lathe. About a...

    European/Asian vs US pool...a question

Just curious about something. In the US, at least if the attitudes on AZB are any indication, it seems like pool is all about gambling and hustling. Personally, I was never really into that and I tend to treat it as a serious sport, but I think I'm in the minority. In Europe/Asia, is it the...

Hightower Lathe Leadscrew power feed video

A couple of people asked me about the leadscrew power feed on Chris' lathe. This last time, instead of trying to explain it all again, I decided to make a very quick, of the cuff video showing how it works. I hope it answers some questions about the "new" system...

    House cues on Hightower lathe

I have a deluxe lathe, and I'm curious about something. A friend of mine has a bunch of house cues that need tips. I'm happy to do it for him, and I could just do it by hand, but I'd like to do it on the lathe. I'm wondering what the best technique for doing this is? In other words, that's the...

    New Hampshire/MA pool halls

I'm considering a move back to New Hampshire...probably Londonderry or something like that. I'm wondering what's around these days. Not really interested in bar tables. I would be interested in some sort of straight pool league, possibly. I don't remember where I used to play when I lived in...

    Magic Chalk :)

OK, we don't really need another chalk thread, but just wanted to talk about my experience because I'm firmly in the "Master is good enough" camp. And Master IS good enough...really is. It works and it's cheap. That said, Magic Chalk works better, is much neater, and....ready for this.....seems...

    Coning shafts on Hightower lathe

Curious how everyone cones shafts if you have a Hightower lathe? If I just use a standard butt taper, it's too much of an angle to take the shaft down very much. If I use the shaft taper I like, it takes a ton off the front of the shaft but barely touches the joint end until I get pretty close...

    helsinki pool halls

I'm near Helsinki for a few days. Wondering where to go to play. I'm not looking for any action...just some decent full size tables. I couldn't bring a cue so somewhere that has keeps decent house cues would be a plus. It doesn't have to be right in Helsinki and would prefer not, actually. I'm...

    Someone send me $1000...

...and I'll send you a nice thank you card in return, along with a picture of one of Dean's cues. :) I was almost starting to worry it was the end of an era, but I knew Dean's new resolution wouldn't last a week.

    Schmelke Cues website, Trojan?

I get a virus error when I try to go to their website, and Kaspersky is blocking access. I would call them, but I can't get to their site to get their phone number. LOL. Does anyone know what's going on here? I know I used to get to it without any problems. I don't know if this is just a false...

    Wrap channel too deep

I finished up my first cue but I made the channel for the leather wrap too deep. It's not terrible, but I'd like to fix it at some point and redo the wrap one of these days when I get a jig. I have a bending pipe and can bend some veneer if I really have to, but I'd like to do something simpler...

    Brazed carbide cutter

Can you sharpen those on a regular grinding wheel, or do you just hope they come sharp and toss them when they're dull? Thanks!

    Sharpening lathe tools

I gave away my grinder years ago when I stopped doing metal work, so I'm without any real way to sharpen lathe tools. I guess I can hone them, but certainly can't make/modify them. I'm thinking of a grinder, but can't really decide which way to go. I think an 8" wheel at 3600RPM is too fast...
