If I didn't reread your post twice cornerman It would have took me until the end of this thread to know who won. It was hard enough to find this thread to which is the only reason I even knew who was in the finals ffs.

Was watchin it last night, Orcollo put on a freakin exhibition starting in the 5th or sixth rack. Jayson shot well when he was at the table. He played some real strong safes but Orcollo was kicking two rails at an Exact spot on the object ball. Once he got to break at 3-2 he broke and ran 7 racks to be up 10-2 and finally got hoooked on the 2 ball during his break on the hill game. He was breaking really soft with a little draw to get the cue ball out to the left rail and back to the middle of the table every time leaving shape on either the 1 or the 2 ball. Honestly every single rack he ran was almost identical. Nine and the 6 stayed in the exact same spot on the table after the break every time, 8 ball went in the bottom right corner every time, 2 ball hit the back rail and came up on the right and the one ball floated over to the left side pocket every time. The other balls stayed around the middle bottom of the table off the rails and he was running racks like he was on auto pilot.

That's what happens when you allow pattern racking playing 9-ball with the magic rack. Hell, if I pattern rack 9 ball with the magic rack, even I'm a favorite to break and run. Nevermind the best players in the world. The 4" pockets were the only thing that kept it from being a complete joke, instead it was just mildly laughable.

Dennis broke softly to make a ball and avoided clusters.
The only clusters were 6,7 and 9 in the foot spot area.
What was even funnier was the 5 ball looked like it was assigned to the left kitchen pocket.
Hell, I think Dennis would be the favorite to run 15-balls if he was allowed to use the Magic Rack and pattern racking.

Just a couple corrections.

Orcollo broke and ran the first three games, so I'd say the exhibition started before the 5th or 6th rack.

He didn't break and run 7 racks from 3-2. He won game 6 in 4 innings, taking it to 4-2. Then he broke and ran 6 games to take it to 10-2.

He made the 5-ball when it was the wing ball 5 times. In his other 6 breaks he also made the wing ball, but it was the 8-ball 5 times and the 6-ball once.

Was he pattern racking?

Yes, he was pattern racking and soft breaking, both expressly against tournament rules. Some of the commentary mentioned it but said spectators like to see guys run packages. This however was not supported by the comments in the chat that were largely against what was going on.

The only defense would be if the final was not expressly being refereed even though the TD was at table-side. So I suppose one could say that unless an opponent complains the game goes on. There also happened to be a dispute a little earlier over a good hit between Rodney and Jayson (I think). And they had to go to the replay of the stream even though the TD was there. So I guess the defense is the match wasn't being officially ref'd and the opponent hadn't asked for the hit to be watched.

Still, if the rules are obviously being broken and an official is there, some action should be taken. Sad that this was allowed and put a damper on Orcollo's dominating performance, imho. Sure he played great, but with the MBR, soft break, and pattern racking, a guy of his caliber is essentially playing the ghost and is expected to break and run more often than not. Frankly, it was a little disappointing.

I posted this in a related thread:

...but why couldn't anyone else do it? In the 11 matches I watched, no one had more than a 2-pack until that final match when Orcollo had a 3-pack and a 6-pack (of course, the matches prior to the finals were races to just 7). Orcollo had just one B&R in his hot-seat match against Shaw, but he sure found the right recipe in the finals.

I agree, though, that it's somehow "unsettling" to see the wired wing ball and the similar resulting layouts time after time.

AtLarge, could you post a link to that thread? Thanks!

I'd have to think back about the hot seat match but in other matches Dennis was breaking medium and hard a lot. The wing ball seemed wired at any speed but the harder break mixed things up a little. But that consistent soft break coupled with the pattern racking was not just controlling whitey but most of the rack.

You make a point though. Jayson was soft breaking too but didn't get it going like Dennis did. Let's remember though that table #6 is a great equalizer. But Orcollo is arguably the best player in the world. He was my (and many peoples I'm sure) pick to win the tournament from the moment I'd heard he had entered.

I still say rack all 15 balls. 1 at the top, 9 in the middle, and 2 and 3 on the corners. Break them. Any ball 10 thru 15 made on the break gets spotted. You can only shoot the 1 thru 9.

I would imagine it'd be harder to pattern rack, and maybe a little more difficult to run out with 6 other balls on the table.

That's kind of twisted, but I like it.

I wanna give that a try soon.

Yeah, that was a bummer. Why would they let 2 rules slide for the final matches? If someone broke out a jump cue everyone would be up in arms!
I absolutely hate the soft break in 9 ball. Almost tuned out! That's one of the many reasons why I wanted Rodney to win. He was absolutely pounding the rack and he called the rule on Shaw.

Jayson was soft breaking but didn't find his pattern. If you noticed in the last break he had in the match, he used Dennis' pattern, but he didn't match the speed and didn't end up with an opening shot. Dennis had success because he was more skilled in finding his pattern and speed for that particular table faster.

No odder than anything else I guess.

Freddie <~~~ gonna steal the idea and say I made it up

The rack seems to create so much controversy. They need to find a way to eliminate the rack mechanics, pattern racking, and make it fair. With this calibre of players, if you make a ball and get shape on the next one, you are almost automatically out. I almost always make the wing ball with the magic rack. It's getting to the point where you might as well have a third party rack and no inspection, just break.

Dennis is a beast. I love watching this guy. However, there is a new guy in town, Jayson is very impressive and will be in the Mosconi Cup, unfortunately, on the wrong side before you know it.

I wish big companies would get behind pool, promoting and sponsoring. The payouts compared to other sports are pathetic. If it wasn't for the backers, a lot of these guys would have to give it up. It's real sad. I wish there was a way to bring people back into all the rooms around the country. It is such a great game.
