What do you all think of the million dollar 9-ball tourament Allen Hopkins is putting on next year?

For those that don't get Inside Pool Mag. here are some of the highlights.

200 or more or the worlds best players
Qualify to play for as little as $200 or Direct buy in for $5000
Players in the main event will play at least 75 games each.
If you win a qualifer your gauranteed to get paid in the $1,000,000 shootout.
The website is www.milliondollar9ball.com but no info there yet. It says check back as they are busy with Vally Fordge Expo right now. Johnnyt

That's going to be so insane, I can't wait to see how it turns out, looks like its borrowing from the concept of IPT but with Allen behind it hopefully it gets done right.

Sounds

pretty good, but more info is needed. I do think if Allen Hopkins is behind it, that it will be done in good fashion.

How much will 1st pay?
How much of the field will get payouts?

Sorry but I've become more and more cynical. I'll believe it when I see it. Hopefully it will be good for the game.

Why make it a $1,000,000 when $500,000 would be impressive enough?
Why ask to go under from the start.
$500,000 is a lot of money. If you made 1st pay $100,000 it'd be more than these guys ever get to play for, anyway.
Start small an build up to a mil.

Why don't we all band together in mind and spirit and do something different. Let's only think of this event in a positive light and believe it's a success even before we see anything. We'll see what happens. ;)

Frankly, Hopkins has a MUCH better rep than Trudeau ever did in the world of pool. Plus I don't think he's ever been in the pokey. :P

Waiting to pass judgment on this until more info is available is the sensible thing.

Man thats alot of money, but then again they pay college football coaches 17 million a year. I can't wait to see who wins, I bet its Efren Reyes. ;)

logically what you say is correct, but the number being a million attracts more attention and publicity, is cooler, and generates an aura around it. if it's not a million, it's just another tourny.

If only someone would try to push billiards the right way, this line of thinking might work.
Till then, I think promising a million will only get you real broke.

I would think that Allen Hopkins would be the kind of guy, who would do his best to keep to his word and hold a tournament with a $1million purse, and the fact that he's looking to organize it for next year, is giving him loads of time to find the bankroll, location and to organize it and I for one, certainly hope that he is successful in setting it up :)

I'm going to be open minded on this, but it will be good for pool if it does happen :)

I can't believe anyone would doubt the man that has been successfully putting on the Expo for like 50 years!:)

A million, though a lot of money in the pool world, is not a lot of money in the entertainment industry. To be a ble to get the finest players the world has to offer together for a huge event has a ton of possibilities, and gigantic video futures IMO.

I think we should have 2 threads for this topic. 1 positive, 1 negative. I'll be in the positive one!:)

Maybe Mike could Get Allen on to chat one night and he can give us the hype for this tourney. Allen never does anything 2nd rate, if he is putting it together it will be top drawer. Rock on Hopkins.

I agree...
Could even be more effective to do 4 or 5 tournaments for a quarter of a million...
Why do I say, possibly 5? Because you will get repeat interest for each of the tournaments...

This would also provide trending information, so you could see what's sustainable. And with the right foundation could eventually build up to the $1 million grand event, that doesn't leave people with that doubt of whether it'll actually work?

I Have Faith That If Hopkins Is Running The Show, That It Will Be An Awesome Event. After Attending The Sbe For The Last Ten Or So Years, I've Seen Firsthand The Production That He Puts On. Even The Eight Ball Tournament He Did Last August Was A Fun, And Well-run Show, On It's First Time Out. I'm Sure Allen Will Provide Information On Thew Web Site, As Soon As He Has The Details Worked Out.

I guess women will be able to try and qualify. He has to live with Dawn. Johnnyt
