$1,000,000 9-ball Tournament

I'm not feelin all these posts that even mention Allen and KT in the same sentance; there is no way that Allen would ever do something like that for so many reasons that it's not even worth debating; if Allen is behind something and it involves balls and a stick you know its gonna be good.

logically what you say is correct, but the number being a million attracts more attention and publicity, is cooler, and generates an aura around it. if it's not a million, it's just another tourny.
yeah a million makes it extra special.

if Dawn believes they can pull it off then so do I.

Why do these people have to high roll right off the bat ?? Whats the highest paid tournament on American soil ? Double its grand prize and that would be great!!!! Just ask Kevin what happens when you start off with those kind of payouts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

betting it will fly

What do you all think of the million dollar 9-ball tourament Allen Hopkins is putting on next year?

I'm betting it will fly for several reasons. First, Allen has the experience and credibility with the players and suppliers to pull this off. He has the network connections. He also is pulling the money largely from the players and redistributing it if you look at the buy in or having to qualify where he gets money from everyone that tries to qualify, enough to cover the winner's $5K buy in I suspect.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of this. It looks like Allen has a solid business plan before he gets started, not just a half-baked idea that there is money to be made. I wish him the best with this venture.

For those that don't get Inside Pool Mag. here are some of the highlights.

200 or more or the worlds best players
Qualify to play for as little as $200 or Direct buy in for $5000
Players in the main event will play at least 75 games each.
If you win a qualifer your gauranteed to get paid in the $1,000,000 shootout.
The website is www.milliondollar9ball.com but no info there yet. It says check back as they are busy with Vally Fordge Expo right now. Johnnyt

If you read it all carefully, you will see this event is to be funded entirely with players money, similar to the way major poker tournaments are funded. 200 players times $5,000 each equals a nice cool million. The trick then becomes getting those 200 players (or their backers) who can and will put up 5K. And that is the reason for the qualifiers. 25 players putting up $200 each equals $5,000. So here is a much cheaper way to get in.

Now, if in fact all the money goes into the purse, than it is a good deal. If money is skimmed off the top, then it is not so good a deal. Even if he ends up with 100 players, it is still a $500,000 purse. Not all bad!

I'm not a knocker. Personally I like Allen and have always found him to be quite reputable. I'm just a realist, and see what he is proposing and what obstacles he may face. But hey, who asked me?

Ok Stick. Will you back one player? Then we need only 199 more. I am willing to back at least one player. Now it's 198. See how easy that is.

If you read what all carefully? On the official website, there's no information whatsoever on how the event is going to be funded.

I have no doubt that If Allen is putting on an event such as this, that it will be as advertised, whatever that will ultimately be.

I have always been a supporter of the idea that an annual event with huge entry fees can work. For years the UPA toyed with the idea of 10k buy ins for 100 players, equalling a million dollar purse. I think that a 5k buy in is much easier and that the players will line up to enter, imo. Unfortunately, this event will probably see a large part of the playing field supported by the help of backers.

Time will tell what the eventiual results will be, but if the event is planned around 5k buy-ins for 200 players, i think it will be a success. I wish him all the luck in the world.

Gabriels Professional Open 9-Ball Championship
64 Players, $20,000 Added to prize pool
1st: $12,000
Corey Deuel

2nd: $7000
Ronnie Wiseman

3rd: $5000
Rodney Morris

4th: $4000
Fabio Petroni

Yeah, I'm sure it cost Deuel more than $12k to travel there, eat and pay for a hotel room. :P

This cannot work based entirely on entry fees, there will have to be siginificant investment by the promoter, this has been attempted before.

Sat tournaments work great for Poker where people can play online but pool is much much tougher logistically.

Furthermore, finding more than a few dozen players to pony up 5k wll be very very tough, particularly after the IPT fiasco.

If anyone can put this together, it's Allen, I wish him luck. I think he's just throwing the idea out there right now to see what type of response he gets.

Well, there are big differences here from the IPT.

IPT, players were asked to pony up $2k to play in a tournament *for a chance* to play in another tournament. Here, it's $5k, you're in the $1mil tournament, period.

And if they go the $200 entry for qualifiers to skip the $5k - well, $200 is a lot less than the $2k the IPT charged for that same chance mentioned above. Chances are there'll be many more dead-money players willing to pony up that $200 for a chance over having to throw down $2k. They've got that "What we lose on each item, we'll make up in volume!" kinda thing going for'em - charge 10x less, and maybe get 10x+ more players in.

What makes you think tournament money comes only from entry fees...there's sponsor money and spectator money aswell...
