10 Ball instead of 9 Ball

I'm just curious on how many Azers think 10 Ball is a better game than 9 Ball. I started playing 10 Ball and that one extra ball makes it quite a bit tougher to run out when compared to 9 Ball. Its also a litter harder to make a ball on the break. I don't think the soft break will work in 10 Ball either.

I'm also curious in the Match with SVB and Duel, how many Break and Runs were made in the 170 games they played.

Prefer 10 Ball

All the bar leagues have stripped 9 ball of all its dignity. Bigger pockets, ball in hand, and such have shaped the game for fast results, NOT better players. The more games, the more quarters go into the tables. Too many A players can beat a Pro in short races with these guidelines. 10 Ball should be the game of the future for Pros. It seperates the quality players from the wannabes.( Note: I am not even good enough to be a wannabe so it is not a slap at other players. ) 10 Ball with tight pockets on 9 foot tables and cue ball fouls behind the line is a good start to weed out some players. I wish the major tournaments would just abandon 9 Ball and switch to 10 Ball to let the Pro level players show us how it SHOULD be done. JMO.

The pool and billiard community spends too much time reliving the past and not enough time looking towards its future. Major reason we are experiencing a slump in popularity I believe. The ficticious days of "The Hustler" are far behind us. They are not coming back. The sport of pool needs to change with the times. ;)

My practice partner and I play 10-ball... it's a better challenge imo.

Mostly, it's less balls made on the break on average... and more blockers early in the rack... leading to more safety play and more kicking opportunities... leading to a better all-around 9-ball or 10-ball skill set in the long run.

I couldn't agree more with that statement. I only play 9ball in league but always play 10 ball for my Rotation pool game of choice.

I agree with most of what you say. However, somewhere on AZ recently, someone posted that the local players had mastered the 10 ball break. I personally find this a bit hard to believe, but I guess It's possible. If the break can be mastered as it has in 9 ball, would 10 ball deteriorate as 9 ball has?

I think switching to 10-ball may be a good idea. It is harder to break 10- ball, but in a few years the players may have found a way to make the same ball all the time, just like they did in 9-ball. The way the pros are controlling the 9-ball break just shows us how the game has progressed. I think if you would have told people 20 years ago that people would be able to hit the rack at 8MPH, make the same ball every time, and have a shot on the 1-ball most of the time, you would be looked at like your crazy. It is not the players fault-they are just doing what it takes to make the most of the situation. If the best results come from soft breaking, then nobody can blame them for doing it. I would rather not see the soft breaks, but until the rules are changed or until they switch to 10-ball, I think we will continue to see it. However, in five years we may be asking if we should change to 11- ball, because the players have figured out the 10-ball rack!

The break isn't 65% of the game at A level and above in 10-ball...+ 1 more ball to deal with on the table. Johnnyt

To Pushout...and rossaroni

When mid level players can beat Pro's at 10 Ball then it is time to make it even harder. 11 Ball? Go to 4 inch pockets? 3 1/2" pockets? There is always a way to seperate the Pros from the rest of the pack. I think the integrity of the game and the respect that pro players deservedly get should be maintained. They (pro players) work 60 hours a week to seperate themselves from the pack, the sport of pool should recognize that and respect it.

For the record: I think Diamond Billiards is making a sincere effort to lead our sport in the right direction by making pockets deeper and narrower on their tournament tables. No one else is trying to make the game better right now. We should all support Diamond sponsored tournaments or events.

I am not affiliated with Diamond Billiard Products.

Pros Versus Wannabees

If you want the pro to separate from the wannabees then go back to roll out rules. When the A player gets out of line he can't duck behind and ball and still win the game. The Pro will pushout to a shot the A player can't make on a consistant basis. I guarntee you this will seperate the Pros from the A players. I was told that Keith McCready's game went down 2 balls when one foul came into play. He was the best shotmaker I have every seen. You get a little weak when he keeps rolling out to a low percentage shot for you and he makes it like its in front of the pocket, believe me I KNOW!!!

That was me that posted that. There are several players on the Florida Pro Tour that have mastered the 10 ball break, Corey Deuel is one of them. No matter how you change the rules, you are always going to have players finding ways to manipulate the balls off of the break. IMO, the games aren't deteriorating - it is just becoming more difficult to beat these players because they are able to get out from the break a large percentage of the time.

I agree with the 10 ball being a better game, but I'd keep ball in hand. Why should the incoming player get spanked for the other guys mistake/scratch?

I have been watching the action challenges on the tough Diamonds, and to be honest the table is the great equalizer there! :D Those great players are shooting different shots BECAUSE the pockets are tough.

If you want a shootout just play 9ball on a loose 4-3/4" Crown with winner rack your own.
