12th US Open One Pocket Championship - Who should be invited?

Lou,

How about you and JoeyA wrestle for a spot? Forget the qualifier - I think we can set up a stream... Or even a PPV for it, lol.

ps. My money is on Joey. He's a Marine ;)

Wrestling, my money would be on Joey too.

But since this is a pool forum (sometimes :-) I would be happy to play Joey for the slot at the DCC.

Smart move, from what I can tell he's still in a slump after that slow-playing-match 12 years ago :D

US Open One Pocket

Thanks to all who gave us suggestions for the US Open One Pocket 'preferred' invite list.

They will all be considered - and keep them coming.

Frank,
You want to wrestle too? WTH have you been eating to stay in shape?

JoeyA,

Don't take Frank lightly. It's aways smaller people who pack a mean punch! Like that tiny guy Pa- Pa - Pacman, something :p

Well sure thing. I don't take anyone lightly. I just didn't realize that Frank was in that kind of shape. I assure you, I'll be giving him even more respect. I always knew just by Frank's writing that he was DA MAN!

This new news about his wrestling prowess just sent him to the top of the food chain.

I should add however that besides my disciplined marine attitude, my son was high school State Wrestling Champion for one year and you have to remember what they say about sons and daughters. ;-)

Mark,

IMO, if you have a field of 48 players starting on Friday and possibly ending on Monday with the final 4, there will be more than enough time for a race to 4 on the Winners side and race to 3 on the One Loss side.

Slow play shouldn't be a problem if the tournament staff enforces the rules of play.

The BCA Pool League Rules for One Pocket do cover 'Slow Play' in a generic form which, IMO, are very applicalbe to One Pocket.

It is the players responsibility to call a ref when he considers his opponet is playing slow. If, after the ref observes the the player, and considers they are playing slow a shot clock is then used on both players from that point on.

If there are tournament officals available to monitor the players and match progressions, then they can issue a warning immediately and both players would have to adhere or a Shot Clock is used.

No rules have to change... JUST enforce the rules that everyone has to play by.

I think some of the younger guys should be invited. I know of a couple young guys that would like a crack at it that have enough speed to do some damage.

Wow, you must think all 1 Pocket champions are on crutches and walkers...

I think Scott Frost is still young... Sylver Ochoa is young... Alex Pagulayan is young... Gabe Owen still has his baby face...

How young? Mind you that it's about half invited and half open. Average Joe maybe competing if they come up with the entry fee when sign up opens.

You know Tom, I was thinking about how that shot clock penalty works and it really sucks as afar as both players being penalized.

In one pocket, occasionally there is a shot that requires more time than most shots and everyone who plays one pocket understands that.

However, if only ONE player is actually playing slow and holding up the match, why should that player be penalized for the other player's slow play? I know you don't make the rules but I am curious as to what others think.

Joey,
Yes, I agree, it does suck for the non-offending player. IMO this might be motivation for the non-offending player to speak to his opponent and make the statement; "If you don't speed up the game, I will have to call a ref and then both of us will have to play by a shot clock".

At the players meeting the "Slow Play" warning shoul count as the FIRST warning for all players. The TD should then explain the penalties. Shot Clock could be as low a 30 seconds with a 10 second warning an only one extension per game. Or it could be as long as 45 seconds with a 10 second warning and only one extension per game. I like the latter rather than the former. IMO, most of the better players know that they can lock into a decision in less than 45 seconds.

On a personal note, I dislike shot clocks. Normally on a "non-professional" tournament a shot clock only makes the player miss quicker.

I don't know, if Mark invited himself, JoeyA, Lou & Frank will pull him behind the dumpster and break his thumbs, LOL. :p

lol, Sunny, I have it on good authority that Mark has knobby/bony knees. It probably wouldn't take much of a tap with a baseball bat :-)

In my experience there's nothing short of using a cattle prod that will speed up a slow player, so I m doubtful an opponent threatening to go to the desk is going to have an impact. I think some guys just don't have any sense of the time they take to shoot. So, for me, I'd be happy to suck up a 30 second shot clock to keep things moving. 45 seconds is too long, IMO.

Chris testa

You all have not seen one pocket played until you've seen Chris testa play the game. He should def get an invite, and if you want the tournament competitive, Gabe and Alex should ask for at least one and the break. I'll take any and all action from any of you nits. Let me know where to send the entry fee you non playing, non betting, bunch of donks, I can't believe we haven't yet recv'd our invite....on second thought maybe we need some weight .... I'm a little drunk and on tilt .....

Take two aspirins, get a good night sleep, and call us in the morning when you're thinking straight.
