14.1 ----101

No biggie. Those who don't care can go on calling it whatever you want. I'll use the right terms. If it catches on, that would be great. If not, it's your loss.

There are more people who read than post. I posted this for them as well, just so they know the correct terminology. After all, if no one tells you, how could you know?

That's fair enough, and I'm glad I now know it's traditionally been called an x-point game as opposed to a race to x. I'll probably err towards referring it to the traditional name. But I don't think it's necessarily disrespectful to the game to refer to it as a race, that's my two pence.

Well, I happen to differ in opinion, and I think it is disrespectful to the game to know the correct term and to intentionally use the wrong term.

Everyone who reads this now knows the correct term. Use it, please.

I've never called a 14.1 game a race to anything. It's playing to this or going to that. I agree that the word "race" doesn't belong in 14.1 terminology - it doesn't fit.

That said, who gives a crap - don't let it ruin your day. There are bigger probs in pool than worrying about people "racing" to 100 or 150.

I give a crap. Thank goodness someone does.

Good grief, Fran. Easy up. I hope I never make the mistake of using the word crutch or kitchen around you :-o

I'm only too happy to help preserve the history and culture of a great game, Lou.

Anyone interested in learning about 14.1 or any other game, Mike Shamos, our billiard historian, is also a great source of information.

Next, we have to teach the next generation of players how to keep score on the beads.

You folks back east still have beads ?? Im lucky if i walk into a place here and the wheels on the table work at all. I always have 2 pencils and a pad in my cue case, lol.

Beads....

Nothing better than "Old School" hanging beads. If you look at my photos of my game room. They are in the photos.

Beads are easy, Fran. Have yo ever tried to teach someone to keep score on the twin counters of a GC? ack.

I've been playing pool since I was 11 years old. I'm now 29. I've never once in my life played pool in a poolroom that had scoring beads.

Ha! If everyone would just remember: Permanent score on the left, rack score on the right, there would be no problem.

But nobody remembers, and you have to figure out who's putting what score on what side. LOL

Plus, I love the ones with the stripped gears that just keep on spinning.... or the ones with the stuck gears where you need a crowbar just to move it one digit.

... Permanent score on the left, rack score on the right, there would be no problem. ...
Except that's exactly the wrong way to do it. The rack score goes on the inner wheels and the total score goes on the outer wheels. Anything else is just stupid and lame.

Nope. Sorry, I disagree. Permanent score is always on the player's left. I've refereed my share of local tournaments with the likes of Crane, Balsis, Margo, Mizerak, etc.

You can call them stupid and lame if you like, but I wouldn't.

Hey Sean..... you're crazy!.... LOL... playing games again. I could not believe that I spelled Beads wrong on my comment. So, I went back and took a look. Spelled it correctly and you added a "L"..... I should of figured.

The way I learned to keep score on the wheel counters was the rack score goes to the left and total score goes on the right (each player has their own counter). Just like we read from left to right.

We would say...... I'll take the right & you take the left. Playing a match to 150.

But as I explained so very patiently to Fran -- which explanation failed to take -- that's just stupid and bogus. BOOHHHHHGGUSSSSSS! Everyone who knows anything about the game knows that the rack score must, every time and without exception go on the inside. How else can you add the two rack scores up quickly? You don't want to be looking over to the side. It's only common sense.

I really wish that you and Fran would try to keep up.

We all tend to go with what we learned first.

The other day in league my opponent said he didn't know how to run the beads and would appreciate some help with them from time to time. He then explained to me how I was marking fouls wrong and then he started marking my score up at the end of my inning instead of him starting to shoot and me taking care of the score. We did it his way because it was much easier than convincing him it was the wrong way. My solution was to stay on the table. Sometimes he let me put up the 14.

I have a nice set of antique beads that I restored. They're sitting under my table because I'm not exactly sure how to keep score with them. Is there a tutorial somewhere on AZ that tells you how?

Every pool room I've ever been to has beads over the tables. Maybe an East Coast thing? I use them in my own inimitable fashion, just because they are so traditional (yes, tradition matters to me a bunch). Plus, I just love that zing! sound as you slide them over on the wire after your run.
