Ralf Souquet and Oliver Ortmann won their matches on the losers' side of the brackets.

2008 WPC Champion Daryl Peach is out of the tournament, losing to Japan's Ohi Naoyuki.

Thomas Engert won his match on the B side against Korean Kim Woong Dea.

Interestingly, Joven Bustamante of the Philippines lost to India's champion Alok Kumar. American Shane Van Boening was to play the winner of this match. So Shane will be playing Alok! :p

From now to the end of the tournament it appears that the tournament is SINGLE ELIMINATION. Is that how you read it as well?

And one single American (not to mention ZERO Canadians). Kinda depressing. The USA really needs to start supporting it's players more and getting them out into these types of international competitions. SVB plays extremely well but to have the whole freaking continent on his shoulders every time he crosses the sea???

It's going to be difficult to make a "stable" system work in the US because prize monies from major tournaments aren't enough yet. Can 40% of the prize money be enough to cover monthly allowance for the player?

Here's a real rough summary for easy understanding. Take for example a conservative target prize money for 2nd Place finish in WPC. If the manager takes 40% of 40k then he ends up with $16K which he then turns around to use as salary for this player to just keep him focused on practicing and performing in tournaments. $16k is $1,333/mo, is this a decent enough monthly salary to cover daily expenses there in the USA or Europe or Japan or the Middle East or Australia or Singapore or ...? But US$1,333.33 multiplied by current exchange rate of 44 pesos=US$1 is 58,666.66 Pesos(30k is average for players in the top32) . If you have that amount a month here in the Philippines then you have a comfortable life. Add to that the 60% from the prize money and the player has some leeway to purchase a car, clothes, go to Boracay or HK for vacation, gamble ....

The Philippine situation is conjucive to pool and that's why players from all over the world come and spend lengthy vacations here.:)

If the Pinoy players all lose at this stage in QATAR, they break even.:) I doubt that will happen so I'm expecting that the higher prize monies that they'll bring home will further enliven the pool scene here (more green to go around in money games).

In anticipation to the next question "How does the stable owner earn from this player?" Well, the above is only for 1 tournament so succeeding tournaments should start benefitting the stable owner.

Need a management group for your stable here? :)

If you are currently on Daylight Saving Time (Summer Time) in Washington DC ,which I think you are, that means you are on GMT -4 hours. That means 12.40pm Thursday in Doha Qatar equates to 5.40am Thursday in WDC. If you are not currently on Daylight Saving Hours it will be 4.40 am in WDC.

For anyone else wanting to work it out for their own location Doha Qatar is GMT +3 hours.

As regards the live coverage......as mentioned earlier I have Al Jazeera Sports Channels 1,2 and 3 and live coverage of this event has not been advertised nor shown in any schedule that I've seen.

That doesn't mean it won't be on live because it is quite common for arabic sports and other channels out here to arbitrarily change their schedules or just ignore them all together, sometimes switching soccer games half way through a match!:)

If Qatar Olympics site are saying it will be on live, then it probably will. I'll be out and about work related most of next couple of days but will post anything if I get the chance.

I read somewhere -- and posted the article -- that a Canadian pool organization instructed its members that they could NOT compete in the Qatar tournament. :o

Shane is fortunate to have a stakehorse/sponsor to pay some and/or all of his expenses, and so does Johnny Archer. That may be why they are the only two Americans who could afford to go to Qatar. The cost to go to Qatar, from what I was told, is $3,500.

There were openings available for American to play in Qatar, and Jerry Forsyth posted an article about it. All interested Americans could apply. I guess there were no takers. Me personally, traveling to the Middle East isn't something that would be appealing or attractive.

Pool is what it is, here in the States. I used to feel just like you, Celtic, about pool's lack of support here in America. I am accepting it today that it ain't going to change. Thankfully, I did not let pool bankrupt me, but it could have very easily if I let it.

In fact, some of my boyfriend's "close friends" do not understand why we don't just pack up the bags and travel to Vegas four, five, and six times a year to hang out. They just don't seem to understand or care that in order to live in a home, have a car, and eat, somebody has to make sure the bills are paid in a timely manner. Going to Vegas four, five, and six times a year is difficult for some folks, financially speaking. :sorry:

I do not believe pool will ever be accepted as a sport in the United States. In Canada, at least according to my Canadian neighbor, snooker seems to be very popular. :)

I find this statement kind of funny, thinking about that infamous Filipino Invasion, led by Jose Parica, followed by Cesar Morales, and then Santos, Ronnie Alcano, et cetera. The U.S. monies seemed to be attractive at one time to the Filipino players. :grin:

Some Filipinos today do enjoy accepting backing from a U.S. Open champion who's currently living in Philadelphia area. Every time I would see him at tournaments, he was surrounded by Filipino champions.

Where there's a will, there's a way, I say! It's the "will" part that troubles me personally today. :p

I been looking for hours for this Al Jazeera Sports Channel 2 and all I found was channel 1.
