Well, here we go ! Never before seen onepocket from 17 years ago!!! These matches are brought to you by sappo from the onepocket.org site. He shipped the VHS tapes to me and I converted them over to be able to upload to Vimeo. Since youtube has a 15 min restriction (unless you get lucky and the remove it), I uploaded to Vimeo so they can be shown in their entirety. These VHS tapes were from the owner of the Billiard Playground, who taped some of the matches when the US Open was held there, in Kalamazoo, MI.

For some unknown reason, there is no audio on the tapes. As far as the quality, keep in mind these were taken with 17-20 year old technology as far as camcorders, plus you got the tape degradation from 17 years of sitting around, the conversion from tape to digital format and the uploading to Vimeo. Considering all of that, these matches are perfectly fine to get to watch some great onepocket from our players of almost 2 decades ago.

The tournament details: (thanks to Mark Griffin for the details, maybe more to come)
Aug 25-28th at Billiards Playground in Kalamazoo, MI.
Grady was the Tournament Director. A article mentions Ed Hall was the owner, but Matt Rosendahl was heavily involved.
$100 entry
39 player field
$10,200 in prize money
Billy Incardona was the winners bracket winner and came in 2nd to Joyner.
1st -Cliff Joyner $2,800
2nd -Billy Incardona ($2,000)
3rd -Willie Munson ($1,500)
4th -Grady Mathews ($1,000)
5-6th -Ritchie Richeson $500
5-6th -Cornbread Red $500
===========================================
All of the matches will be grouped together in a album on my Vimeo site. You can get to the album here

if you have trouble with the video below, just click the link above to the album that has all the videos in them.. you can then watch it directly from Vimeo.

How cool is *that*!

I'm deadlining on a job right now, but I can't wait to check out these vintage video clips. Thank goodness somebody out there has preserved these, so that we can all enjoy them.

Great job, Greg. I know how much work it takes to embark on an endeavor like this, which is huge and time consuming. Thanks so much!

Wow!

Really Cool stuff!! Thanks for doing this. I know all these guys and it will be fun to sit back tonight and watch them play. Thanks again!!

Cali, you're the best.

Seeing Billy and Willie play was a treat.

Incidentally, the balls they are using look like Dekoret by Rascig.
They were the ball of the show at the BCA trade show in '89 at Nashville.
They are a bit lighter but you can do some nice tricks with them...they
'float' with spin better.
They can identified by the distinctive blue on the 2 and 10 balls.

For those interested : US open was played on Big Gandy tables with NOT so tight pockets. That pool room was closed for business in late 90s. The last US open in kalamazoo was held in Radisson Hotel, won by Effren and after that no more US Open till Mark Griffin gave rebirth to it. Few months after the US open in Radisson, Gary Spaeth passed away. The owners of the US Open and Billiards Playground were nice Peeps.

I wish there were more threads like this one. Thanks, Cali, you're the man!

(JAM, or somebody please re-educate me in comma use? I know I did something wrong with that last sentence.)

Tee-hee. It's two separate sentences. Some reference sources, e.g., Gregg Reference Manual, Lillian Morson's English Guide, et cetera, might suggest a semicolon.

Example A: Thanks, Cali. You're the man!
Example B. Thanks, Cali; you're the man.

I think I would choose Example A, though Example B would not be wrong. :p
