1Pocket- Whats the Correct Shot Here?

You both need 1 ball, you have pocket 'A', both the cueball and 3ball are frozen to the rail. Your opponent is a very strong player. What is the correct shot to play? Either I double kiss right after contacting the 3, or they both go to the bottom rail and collide with each other there. Kicking behind the 3 with english is difficult also. Is this worth taking an intentional scratch, or is there something high percentage that I am not seeing?

This is how I would play it and it is a fairly east shot to execute. Use top right english on whitey and about an 1/4-1/8 hit on the 3 ball. There is no kiss in this shot.

That is how I suggest shooting it as well, and try to shoot soft enough that the object ball stays close to the foot rail so that it does not sell out a bank. I shoot it with bottom right rather than top right, because I am better able to freeze the cue to the head rail that way, and there is less risk of a double kiss if I accidentally hit it too full. Using bottom increases the chance of a scratch in the corner, but I have practiced shooting it that way a lot, and now it is just more comfortable for me.

As an alternative. If I'm playing a weeker player who probably doesn't bank that well (and/or the table is tight) I'll play this.

I understand he can come back at me with the two railer shown. If he doesn't hit it good you may be out of the trap.

That is reason I suggested top, but the shot can certainly be executed with bottom as well. Leaving the 3 ball in the position I suggested is a stronger position than on the bottom rail IMO. Leaving the 3 ball on the bottom rail leaves your opponent with an easier option to move the 3 up-table to his side. You do have to be careful of selling out the bank as you suggested.

I tried this shot and its still very difficult to avoid the double kiss. Does everyone agree that it's the right shot? Any other opinions? Freddie, Grady, anyone?

If you are experiencing a double kiss with the suggested shot there is something amiss in the way you are executing it. There is no kiss in this shot. If there is a stronger shot for this situation I am all ears (or eyes in this case). ;)

For some reason I see only a blank screen, no pool table. ???

Sorry about the red arrow, it wonl't stay where I put it.

Why not the 5 rail bank? Hit the right third of the object ball and a way it goes. The cue ball will be plenty out of the way to accomplish it. The arrows show the object balls path and the cue ball path is B, C, D, and the last arrow. Note: this shot will not go easily on slow nap cloth, but the object ball will still be tough to play where it ends up. I shot this 5 times real quick. I made it twice, left it in the corner pocket twice and it ended up on the bottom rail once. SO this worked great for me.

If it's double kissing, it means you are not hitting it thin enough, or not enough right english, or both. This shot requires a lot of right english to get the cue out of the way. The closer to the bottom rail the OB is, the more difficult it is to avoid the kiss, and at that position, I would try about an 1/8 ball hit. The only other options I see are the risky kick you already mentioned, and the intentional that costs a ball and puts your opponent in a great position to trap you again. Maybe someone else will have another option and I can learn something new.

I may try and soft kick 2 rails and try and hit the bottom side of the 3. I would do it with the speed that if I didnt get the cue ball to the raill after contacting the 3, then I would have played an intentional scratch and not sold out the game. Or just take and intentional scratch....I tend to play conservative if I think I can out move my opponent in the long run.

I finally had more than a few minutes to practice this shot and I figured out how to hit it. I was hitting the ball too full because I was trying to compensate too much for the english (since you are slightly jacked up, it masses a little). That's why I kept getting the double kiss. One of the shots leaves an easy cross corner to your opponents hole. If I hit it a little thinner, it leaves the cueball on the short rail on my side of the table and the cueball up table (obviously the better shot).

As for the 5 railer, thats too dangerous a shot to execute even for a top player, IMO.

Did you try shooting it? With a one third ball hit and bottom right English it seems to end up just fine for me. Even if you are off a little going that many rails helps correct itself. Oh well, it was just a thought. The cue ball did end up on the head rail for me everytime. The bottom right helped kill it coming off the last long rail.

The 5 rail shot is agressive but a very good shot and easier that you think. Less agressive would be a 3 rail, side/end/end. However, I would use draw on the 5 rail and leave it on the opponents side rail, about 2 or 3 diamonds past the side pocket. The degree of agressiveness you use is subjective, depending on your opponent. Perhaps in this current game, the less agressive cross-over is the best shot.

Where is the shot?

All I get is the help instructions for the Wei table. Please provide a link to the shot directly in CUETABLE FORMAT.

Taking a foul is okay, as is a soft bank of the ball to your side. The latter leaves a return bank, however. This is a definate trap spot - try not to lose the game if you can, even if it means taking a foul.

One thing I can promise, Cliff Joyner would shoot the 5-railer alll day long and twice on Sundays.

I'd try this shot, with just enough energy to make contact with the 3 and send it partway up table.

That is not a very easy shot, and even if you hit it good, you are 90% to sell out an easy long bank. If you miss the 3 you just lost the game. A little risky IMO.
