2 new lathes

Several months ago we bought a small pallet load (12) of these lathes we had all intentions of re working them to acept a cue butt thru the spindle, wel as things went on we never got the time to do so and after looking at the cost of changing these over we decided not to go ahead .....

Is it even possible to rework them as you intended ? I'd be suprised in there is enough wall thickness in the spindle to bore it out much bigger than stock (and you'd loose the spindle taper in the process), but I've never measured one. Otherwise it looks like a reasonable little lathe for the money, imo.

Greetings Dave,

There used to be an article on minilathe.com
about the exploits of someone who had used a reamer
to increase the bore to 15/16.
IIRC - stock bore is 20mm<.78xxx in>

Dale<who STILL wishes Dave would build a 12x36 replacement bed for the minilathe>

when we looked these over we decieded if we went ahead and did this we would have to make a new head spindle assembly which would have cut down on the gears and speed adjustment we still down the road may try but at this time have to many projects going and really dont have the time.

I have 4 of these little lathes . One works , 3 are for parts. When they work, for small stufff they are great, as long as you use it on soft stuff. Steel will break it in a hurry. The electronics are a weak point, hit the wrong switch at the wrong time and it takes forever to figure out what blew this time. .The automatc feed works , sometimes. Continually replaceing half-nuts . Jim

So you have to ask yourself...is it worth it at any price?...long ago I quit buying junk as it's not worth the aggravation...;)

They certainly are not the best built and have their limitations however I have a Central Machinery one that has a 1983 date on the ser.# plate that I use at tournaments for ferrule replacement and have used it also for tips. At the price they cost they pay for themselves two or three times over at the first tournament. Mine has no power feed and runs a little faster (200 - 3200) with no gear change.

I've turned quite a bit of stainless, aluminum, brass, phenolics, and others on mine, and have yet to even strip one gear. That does suprise me because the gears are plastic, and It came with an extra set, so that would have me think It's easy to strip them, but It has been my experience so far. I guess if I tried to take super deep cuts on steel, then I may have an issue, but I take My cuts in moderation, and so far no stripped gears. You can buy the gears from little machine shop I think. Atleast, I remember they use to sell them. Not sure if they still do or not.

No problems with the controller either, although I have seen some of the other brands on ebay with controller issues. The powerfeed still works fine on mine also.
Someone could certainly spend more and get a better lathe, but for what I paid I'm not disapointed. I'm sure It's paid for It'self by now.

Mine never had a power feed at any time. it was built before they were installed. These things are known for controller problems but there is a fellow who rebuilds the electronics for 30 or 35.00. my electrics are still working after 25 yrs. but at times the variable speed hunts a little. I've been looking for another one so as to have a power feed and a compound on it. Just been waiting for H/F to pass out another 15 or 20% off coupon.

That sound like a reasonable price. If Mine goes out, I may need that contact info;) As you know most are manufactured pretty simular, most by the same place, and then distributed by different retailers. I had seen alot of them on ebay with controller issues when I was trying to decide on getting mine, so I realize that's a concern, as It was for me at the time. I'm not sure how I got lucky so far. I still have the box It came in, and checked the date, got mine in early 2001, so It's been alittle bit of time, but everything still works. The only problem I really had so far was during shipping.

Now I bought one of their pancake compressors back then too, and have had nothing but problems with It. Right out the gate the preasure regulator was junk. Then on the phone I got the run around, until they finally put Me through to some tech guy. I assured him That no amount of ajusting was going to help It, still he kept me on the phone for near an hour messing around, having me double try everything I had done already, then finally says yep It's bad. They send me a new one, It works, but sometimes kept running past the set PSI, until I got scared, and shut It down manually. I messed with it for a while, forget what I did, but got It working like a charm. I kept the peacock valve open during storage so moisture didn't build up, but then after a few months of nonuse one time, I busted It out, and the freaking compressor sounded like It was dragging for some reason. I checked the oil level, and It was fine, so I don't know what the problem was, and got so uptight, that I just stored It away. maybe i'll mess around with again one day, but My brother bought one of the little twin cyl/tank models from the local autoparts store, and lets me keep it at my house since he rarely uses it, and It's works like a charm everytime I fire It up. I do sometimes have to pop the relief valve off to start It back up, but usually that's only when I'm using My framing nailer, and so I can keep enough preasure built up to sink the nails all the way after I fire a bunch of therm off and PSI starts to get low. still it's more dependable then the one I bought, and i think He paid less, not to mention no shipping cost since he bought His locally.

I guess My point, You take your chances with the import stuff. It's cheaper, and sometimes well worth the price, but is hit and miss as far a quality from one unit to the other. Sometimes You get lucky, receive a well built unit, and get one heck of a deal out of It, then other times Your reminded why you normally prefer more expensive higher quality tools.

I guess the little lathe I just got lucky on. BTW in case It's of any use, on the box i noticed that UPS had the shipping weight marked at around 95 pounds.

All my equipment I made myself and is accurate to .002 or less...

Oh...I was going to add how funny it was that after you got pwned on trying to pass these off for $50.00 more than others you suddenly add shit to the sale to try and save your ass...

Craig, it is evedent that you are personally biased against Lee. Your opinions regarding his post are always always negative. Your are not swaying people away from him, you are just continuing to rant. Lee's prices are not out of line, in fact that are some of the best out there. If you contrabutions where a 10nth of what his are, I think you may deserve an opinion. Please refrain from hijacking his threads I am tired of hearing it. On the other hand I have found Lee's post helpful.

You can take the blinders off now...look at how Lee has hijacked other threads here...I offer alot of my skills to those that ask for it so I don't know what the hell you are talking about...if Lee had any tact whatsoever when problem or conflicts arise I wouldn't care about it as much...

Well Craig, try some constructive criticism for once. You just keep taking cheap shots. Let everyone else decide for them selves if they want to do business with Lee. Let Lee sink or swim on his own. I am just tired of you going off on him and trying to suck him into another online argument. By trying to make him look bad you are doing the same to your self. You may very well have good advise. Advice will do no good if no one listens.

This is just my opinion but it would be great if you just shut up if you have nothing nice to say.

Jim.

Trust me...I bite my tongue in alot of situations however just for you Lee gets cut off from any further comments from me....

we are including 2 of our live centers with each lathe #1 morse pointed and concave
350.00 each
shipping is above and beond that
Just for the record, Lee included the centers at the same time that he posted pics, and that was before anyone mentioned it being cheaper elsehere. Don't want to get in the middle, just pointing that out.

It only has like a 3/4 inch spindle bore and more like 5/8 with the stock chuck
I use it for ferrule side of shaft only
