2007 Amway Women's World 9-Ball Championships

Please make this sticky so I can find it. :-)

Okay, I am here in Taipei to root for Kelly Fisher as she goes for her first world championship title.

I will try and give you updates since it is nearly impossible to find anything out about this tournament on the web. That's right, the WPA website doens't even have a direct link to the organizer's website. Once you are at the organizer's website there is only one link to the documents for signing up and booking a hotel. No directions to the event.

But, be that as it may, I, with the help of my staff and many friendly people was able to find the giant shopping mall where the event is being held.

This mall looks like Disneyland meets Prada. It is huge and inside it is comprised of overlapping circles on 9 floors. That's right 9 floors, 7 above ground and two below. Each floor is primarily devoted to one type of goods, clothes, furniture, food, cosmetics, and so on.

The two basement floors are devoted to sport and activity. There is the biggest and hippest fitness club I have ever seen. Below that spread out on the entire floor space of the mall is a track for inline skating, a full fledged skate park, a gigantic climbing wall, a driving range, mini-golf, a 20 table pool room with all Gold Crown knockoffs, a huge row of batting cages, batting, ping pong and soccer games where you get points for hitting targets, badminton courts, two full sized basketball courts, table tennis training facilities and more that I probably missed.

The only thing missing is living quarters and I am sure that there are some there. I wouldn't doubt that there a re a few people there who haven't seen the outside world in a while :-)

Anyway, I will try and provide updates as I can to keep you informed.

Your friendly reporter from Taipei signing off. Good night and good rolls.

Hey John:

Take photos of everything you see, I would love to check them out.

I was there 20 years ago.

Also, can you show the CueTable HowTo in Chinese to folks there?

Chao knows how to use CueTable...

Group C is totally insane!

Even the winner of the qualifier, Tan Hsiang-Ling, is the strongest player of all the qualifer winners, in my opinion!

I am happy to see Kyoko Sone won a qualifier, just met her in Seattle, when she won her qualifier to Vegas.

Is that Neil Feijen's girl friend in group D?

Many great subplots at once.

Ga Young Kim and Xiaoting Pan have left Allison Fisher without a title through the early portion of the WPBA season. Jasmin Ouschan broke Allison's heart at the BCA pro event last May. Allison may well use this opportunity to reassert herself against these. Then again, one of them may best her again.

Ga Young Kim's bid for three straight WPBA titles is a great story in and of itself.

Kelly Fisher and Monica Webb have showed fine form since the last WPA World Championship. Can they make a run at this title?

Shin Mei Liu is always one of the las few. Can she get over the finish line in this one?

Will the arrival of a new star on the horizon be part of the story?

PS As somebody in this thread noted, that group C is an absolute killer.

Johanna Espinoza is stunningly beautiful. It will be interesting to see if her game matches her natural sparkle.

Amway has sponsored a tournament here for 10 years in a row and they had a welcome party for the pros at the Amway distribution center. Two quips came out that I found to be quite funny.

I have to set it up for you. All the players and retinues were seated in the room and the luminaries were brought on stage to say a few words, there was a professional MC on hand, Amway handed out all kinds of internal awards to the emplyees who did best on their in-house league with the prizes being presented by Allison and Shin Mei Liu.

Allsion was asked what she had been doing to prepare for the event and she said, "oh, running marathons, doing triathalons, all that sort of stuff." The audience, comprised of pool players, had a good laugh at that.

The other was during the awards, which the tired and hungry pool players were sitting through while looking forlornly over the table full of food, Kim White commented, "It's like the Aisan Oscars". That got a few titters among those who heard it and was a bit of comic relief.

Amway did put out a nice spread. I hope some of the jetlagged players got some rest in time to get in snych with the local time. Well I am off to the venue to see what it looks like. Hopefully I will have internet access there to provide updates.

I see that there is an official site which is great. I will try and get some behind the scenes tidbits as they come my way.

She probably didn't want to travel. It's quite a distance for relatively low dollars. I guess most of the players here have their expenses somewhat offset by sponsors. Karen pays her own way so that might have been a consideration.

I suppose for some the prestige outweighs the financial draw. I was struck by that on the bus to the venue yesterday. So many players from around the world each hoping for that magic tournament where it all comes together and they are the World Champion.

The best of the best in their respective countries. It's exciting.

Again, I'm rooting for the Pinay Rubilen Amit. I see she's in Allison Fisher's group. This tournament should be entertaining.

John,
Please send my best regards to Kelly.
We talked a bit about last year's WPC when we met in VF. I remember a match she played with Ga Young, the score was 7-2 for Ga Young, but either of them have missed a ball in the whole match.
Kelly also hit all her snookers--one of them was a three rails kick with the rest with the cue ball sitting very close behind another ball.
It was just that Kelly sometimes let Ga Young see the ball after the kick, and Ga young would run out everytime.
Richard

I'm watching the Ga-Young Kim (KOR) and Akio Ohtani (JPN) match now and Ohtani is up 3-1

Now 3-2

Now 4-3. Race to 5. Ga Young almost hung an 8 ball which would have given the match away.

Kim wins 5-4. Some pretty sloppy safety play by both.
