crmdog said:How about a qualifier in DC since we're also invited:![]()
It's not too late to throw something together for this year and grab one of those last remaining spots. Crmdog should talk to his local room owner and see if they can get a qualifier together for next weekend.JMD in VA said:crmdog:
Sorry pal! I don't know any poolroom owners from DC. If I did, I would have one do one. These kind of sprung up themselves over the years. The poolroom would contact me and tell me they are paying for X# of spots, pay for the spots and would then hold qualifiers. They would send me the names once they had them all.
If you can hook me up with one for next year that would be awesome!
Just bring me the name of the poolroom, name of person to speak to and a contact number when yuo come to the State Tournament this year.
Creole said:Curious if anyone knows who won this tourney last year. Thanks for any reply.
You are absolutely correct about the prior winners.Black-Balled said:IIRC:
2004- Chris Loar
2005- Keith McCready
2006- Chris Loar
2007- TBD (this I am sure of)
Ooh- I regret to inform all my friends down there that I will be unable to attend this year. Furthermore, I regret to inform all involved that I am sending a pinch-hitter to beat you all up for me.

Well run event as always. The full field had a great time and, as quitecoolguy said, Saturday night was something else! Hadn't seen that much action in the Playing Field for a while. (Course I don't get out much.) We had our first presenting corporate sponsor, 5 Hour Energy Drink. They were kind enough to send lots of free samples and t shirts. We're hoping they find this sponsorship to their liking and want to expand. (Hmmmmm, DCC comes to mind....)
Larry Kressel took down the finals going undefeated in the event. He beat Brandon Shuff for the hot seat 9-6. Eric Moore took down John Newton 9-6 to get to the one loss finals and Shuff took him out 9-5 to set up the rematch for the title, one race to 11.
Larry drew first blood and it went back and forth until Larry caught a gear at 2 all and ran to 5-2. There was a short break to change videotape - you'll be able to catch the match on youtube soon as the video is edited - and Brandon jumped up and tied it at 5. Larry got to 7-5 and Brandon tied it up again! From there Larry got the rolls and took it down 11-8. It was a very entertaining match with a number of impressive offensive and defensive shots.
Neither player played flawlessly but both played beautiful pool in streaks and it was really great to watch. (I was refereeing the match so I had the best seat in the house.)
Brandon took me out of the winner's bracket Saturday night 9-6 (I rattled 3 - 9 balls; I might have been a tad overwhelmed.) and I got to talk with him at length afterwards and after the final. What a terrific young man! He's smart, focused and very gracious in defeat as well as in victory. We'll see more of him on a national stage given enough time. He's a real student of the game and I learned a few things about the break playing one set against him and refereeing another one. (JAM he spoke very highly of you and Keith. Should have seen his face light up when I mentioned that he now had a trophy similar to Keith's and would win his own Champion trophy next year.)
Kressel was very pleased with having finally nailing down a decent sized title. He got a few rolls during the tournament, I think you have to to go undefeated, and really stayed focused, closing out his matches well.
First place was entry into the US Open and $900. 2nd was $700 and I think 3rd was $500. 12 places were paid.
There will be an article in IP that I wrote along with some great pictures from our own Rich R. His lovely bride ran the board all weekend and kept the TD focusedwhich is no small feat. Chris Futrell was in the tournament but was eliminated late the first day, finishing one round out of the money. Defending champ Chris Loar finished in 9-12th place.
All in all, it was a great tournament and I know that JMD is proud of what he's managed to build in such a short time.
Brian in VA - can't wait to see Rich R's pictures.

Congratulations to Larry Kressel. He's a trooper, and it is cool to see him win the big one. I'll bet his girlfriend was on pins and needles, pulling him into the winner's circle. I wish I have have been there and seen it up front and close!
And Brandon Shuff comes in second place! I can see him grinning from ear to ear!
Eric Moore, I think, is from Norfolk area, if memory serves me right. Did Chris Futrell make the tournament this year? Inquiring minds want to know.

quitecoolguy said:Well i dont know about the tournament cause i left early on Sat and didnt go up there on Sunday..but i have to JD damn fine job on the tournament..you always amaze me with the way you run the VA Open...but the Side Pocket was alive and blazing..Brandon and Larry locked horns for 5oo a set race to nine..but Brandon handed Larry and nice cold glass of azz whopin..but i will give Brandon credit...he said some good things about Larry when it was all over..i was talking to Brandon and he said..that Larry has incredible natural talent and has a great game but i have better machanics and ball control..and I think i have a higher gear than he does. Thats class in my book to give the guy you just beat that kind of props. Todd of Parrot Cue is a FUNNY ASS GUY he had me rolling the whole night..it was great....it was bet it up night in there..side bets were rolling..my teacher and good friend Bernie Kirby was there doing his thing..he played a kid from VA beach i think..when i left he was one set ahead. (Hey Jason i know you read this thread sometime..Tell your dad(Bernie) I said i hope he did well) Also Kevin if you read this post..Dude you are the funniest damn guy i have met in a long time and you have a pass in Richmond anytime you want buddy. It was what a pool room should be like ..games all over the place money changing hands... the words "YOU GOT ACTION" being yelled accross the room..it was wonderful. I just sat back and talked to everyone..including the Monster bodyguards Brandon had with him..Dear god i thought i was a big man..those two could have asked me for my cues and jeep and i would have thrown in a full tank of gas.I just want to say well done to all that made the VA OPEN a great event both at the tournament and at the Side Pocket...BRAVA..ohhh..and Sterling VA...we are coming up there to check your pool room out..hehe
Creole said:The two guys with Brandon staked him staked him against Larry... Real nice guys, with a lot of gamble. Everytime I looked up I think the one guy was outside flipping coins for a hundred.
You'd have been proud of the way I played with the exception of those 3 shots in my 4 matches. Simple fact, I didn't have my eyes focused right on them and it cost me. I'm working on it. I fought back from 6-8 to win on the hill and from 2-4 to win on the hill and that 2nd match I was in absolute control especially on the last 2 racks. Wait til next year!Scott Lee said:Brian...You and Josh put on a great event! I'm sure it will continue to grow!
I can't BELIEVE you rattled 3 nine-balls! Holy cow!![]()

Did you fall out of your "process", or what? Remember, even when you're nervous, you're supposed to stay down and repeat your warm up cycle, until you calm down enough to free-swing the cuestick through the CB... ESPECIALLY on the game ball!

Oh well...back to the drawing board! I'll see you again probably at the end of next month!
