2007-your Man In Manila

Thanks Jeff. I'm in the lobby of the SunMoon Hotel now, dabbing away on their computer. For hotel guests the charge to use the computer is 25p an hour, about 60 cents. Who needs a laptop here at those prices. There are internet shops lining the streets, all charging similar prices. I amd staying right off Perimeter Road, across from the old Clark Air Force base. It was handed over to the Philippine governement in 1993.

On the base they built a huge mega mall, with hundreds of stores, and even a movie theater. I went to see Balls Of Fury last night. FUNNY! The mall is very clean (they have people whose only job is to walk around with a whisk broom and clean) and not as crowded as malls in Manila. And the prices run about .25 cents on the dollar for what you would pay for something in the states. I paid 100p each for two movie tickets. About $2.35 a ticket.

I could get very lazy and comfy over here. But I have a book to finish and I'm headed for the Mosconi Cup in December. And then Derby City in January. I may come back early next year for some Asian Pacific Tour events. We'll see what time allows.

Looks like you're refering to this event:

"As part of the Asia-Pacific Tour, Raya will stage the first Philippines 10-Ball Open at the Araneta Coliseum on January 21-27, 2008."

I'm making arrangements already for that event. :)

See you there again Jay.

The Philippine 10-Ball Open was held last September BlowFish, you're probably
talking about the World 10-Ball Championships, I can't confirm the date though...

Still in Angeles. Rented a motorbike today and took a "companion" for a ride into the hinterlands. We visited the Goddess Of Peace Memorial which was a beautiful and spiritual place. And then took a tour of the old Clark Air Force Base. It's frickin' huge! they have converted the old air field into a commercial airport, offering flights to all the resort areas of the Philippines. For example a RT ticket to Cebu is $74! This is on an Airbus jet and is a one hour flight each way. Try to get a deal like this in the states, or even from Manila Airport.

I have a return match with Singapore Johnny tonite. I have played in a few bars but there are really no games for me here, except for Johnny. I could go into Manila and visit One Side, but I like it here, and have a new GF. Two more days and I'm on a flight back to Western Civilization (as we know it :)).

Been following the results of the Earl-Shane match and must say I'm not surprised. Maybe Earl will find a gear tomorrow, but I doubt it. I called this one a mismatch from the start. There are many better match ups for Shane than a "has been" like Earl. Most of them were mentioned on the thread about the match. The one name I didn't see that I think is a great match for Shane is Dennis Hatch. He has a big game and can play with anyone.

I guess when it's over the excuses can begin again. If Earl this, or if Earl that. You know what they say, excuses are like assholes, everyone has one. The truth is a much better explanation IMO. Earl is a "head case" and until he gets the help he so desperately needs, he will never be a factor in a major event again. I feel that he was exploited here. Everyone wants to see the train wreck when it happens. Personally I don't. I'd prefer to see him take a year or two off from pool, and try to find some inner peace.

I am torn right now. I still care for her but we have some serious money issues that are unresolved. I'm sure you can relate.

It is true that over here, a man can have as many wives as he wants and can support. No law against it. A few other things that take some getting used to include a restroom with no toilet paper. Only a separate bucket of water with a ladle. You figure it out, I don't want to.

My last day in paradise. I am on my way back to the states manana. Spent last night with Ted Lerner and Singapore Johnny at Richies house (another U.S. ex-pat). Richies from Jersey and he has a beautiful 2BR apartment with the nicest pool table in Angeles downstairs. He pays $200 a month for this deluxe apartment. Cool, huh?

Ted Lerner and Richie got the inspiration for bringing the WPC to the Philippines while watching the matches from Cardiff years ago. They approached Yen Makabenta from Raya Sports and the rest is history. Last night Ted asked me to show them some shots I know, so that's what we did. Show each other cool shots. Johnny didn't understand about throwing frozen balls, so we spent time on that stuff. Both frozen in a line and on billiard shots that are off angle.

Also I showed them a double kiss shot I taught to Efren years ago. TRUE! After I showed this shot to Efren he practiced it like 30 times so he had it down. It's where a ball is frozen on the point of the corner pocket and you double kiss it into your hole. Much easier to control the cue ball this way. Then I showed them how to shoot a ball into the side pocket past the point. When a ball is frozen against the point of the side and won't go in, you can actually shoot it "thru" the point. Hit it hard with low english and the point (remember it's rubber) will push in enough to let the ball go thru.

Then I showed them how to make a ball hanging in the opposite corner pocket when they are corner hooked, by shooting off the point. And how to jump balls by jumping off the side cushion. Then I showed them my signature shot, banking a ball cross corner that is just above the point of the corner pocket. I've been shooting this shot for years and still don't know how it works. It looks impossible! I also showed them a shot that Buddy didn't know how to make until I showed him. And a few other goodies that they loved. It's such old stuff to me that I never expect anyone to get excited about it, but they do. Ted even wants to make a DVD of all these strange shots.
Johnny asked me to play on his team tonite in the local league. Why not?

Jay, enjoy your last moments in paradise. ;) Will see you soon and have a nice trip back to reality. :)

PS: You should make that DVD of those shots as Ted said.

Enjoy your last night in heaven Jay and all the shots that you've mentioned
I understood well except for your signature shot. The double kiss shot
works even better if you have seen a wooden pool table over there. You
can "ride" the puck (wooden disc) all the way to a hole even if it is a table
length shot. Check this out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSHbLJz2vhw

I discovered the shot were I made the ball into the side pocket past the
point accidentally many years ago while I was trying to bank it in a corner
pocket, while the the hanging ball while the CB is cornered hooked has
gotten fancier. They now shoot off the point 3 rails! Actually it's 4 rails
including the corner tit! :D

Johnny enlisted me to play for his team last night in the local bar league. They play five players to a team, but only four games apiece. Three games of Eight Ball and one game of 9-Ball. Johnny and the team Captain Jeff made a point to tell me how important each game was, since they play by rounds. First five games is one round, and the team that wins three or more games wins that round.

So they put me in first against the other team Captain. I break and run all the balls but cannot make the eight. She (yes she) runs her balls down to the last ball and dogs it. I win game one. Make a long story short, I win all four games including two run-outs. Our team wins the match, and I meet a lovely young girl working at the club. And I mean really lovely. We hit it off from the start, but while I'm playing another guy is hitting on her. Damn!

Her aunt comes over to me and asks me if I want her. Of course I say. So somehow they convince the other guy that she is taken. Let me just say that my last night in paradise was truly paradise. I fell in love with sweet Charity, and now I wish I could stay longer. She is sitting next to me now and smiling as she reads this. The bus to Manila goes in one hour and from there it is off to the airport for the lonnng flight home.

Another memorable visit to the enchanted land of the Philippines.

You're such a dog Jay! If she's sitting right beside you, then tell her this,
" Mahal kita at siguradong babalikan kita, walang halong stir!" :D

Where did you get this? Please get your facts straight.

Our country being as poor as it is, prostitution has always been hard to control but it is still ILLEGAL so please try not to brag too much about your "girlfriends."

If Mr. Jay converts to Muslim, he is legally allowed to have more than one wife. he-he

Haha, I'm half filipino, but this is SO true! Then they start slowly bringing family member over. A lot of people still think in America money grows on trees and we are all rich and don't need to work - ah the dreams of the Land of the Free! I really don't blame some of them...the poverty is so bad that even the nicest/sweetest persons become manipulating just to get the hell outta there!

Not defending Jay. I don't see anywhere about prostitution being mentioned in any of his writings. How many wives does Erap have? Ramon Revilla? Dolphy? I'm not condoning it, I'm just stating the facts/reality. It's illegal, but you see lots of rich people with so much mistresses.

What else can you make of that? Plus intentionally or not, it even sounds like a promotion for sex tourism. That's my take anyway.

He wasn't saying mistresses, he said wives. It's a given it's not illegal to have mistress/es anywhere so he wouldnt have to point out the legality of it if he wasnt really referring to actual wives and I doubt he was strictly referring to Muslims. His saying that is a false reflection of the status of women in this country.

This is a country with millions of hardworking women who do make a decent living, where 50 percent of senior corporate positions are held by women, where the global average is only in the low 20s. But you read his tales of hired women and how it's perfectly legal to have multiple wives, and what kind of picture do you go away with? I'm sorry but any Filipina reading what he says can't help but be slighted.

Ah Jay ...

You're bringing back lots of sweet memories for me. Been to Clark AFB, actually not long when I spent over a month trying to catch my 3rd ship in the Navy. I passed through it from Japan on my way to Subic Bay to wait 10 days until the USS Point Defiance tied up there from Nam.

It was a good thing I won about $160 in the slot machines in Japan, it made my 10 day wait so much more pleasant in Subic. Considering I did 3 tours of Nam in the Navy, I was in Subic Bay more times than I can remember.

Almost married a girl there that was from Manila. Still have her picture.

How about on the front page of your own newspapers when a major politican was just buried (the one who was assasinated in Quezon City), and all four of his wives are shown in mourning for him. They were clearly identified as wife #1, wife #2, wife #3 and wife #4. I guess you haven't seen the hundreds of clubs that dot the landscape of Manila and Angeles City. Each club is full of filipina girls hoping to find foreign boyfriends. Money is rarely discussed either, that is strictly a matter of the generosity of each man.

These are the "facts" and it is an accepted part of life in the Philippines. The filipino men don't seem to mind too much either. It was one of your own countrymen who imparted the following words of wisdom to me, when I was torn between Mikaela and another woman. He said "man is by nature polygamous". Sorry if I offended your sensibilities, but you would have to walk around with your eyes closed to not be offended. EVERYWHERE you see foreign men (young and old) walking hand in hand with young filipina women. And often they have one on each arm.

And the women seem to enjoy this as much as the men do. No one is forcing them to do anything. They openly flaunt their relationships with foreigners and are proud to be seen with us. If there is some hidden agenda here (other than perhaps a desire to relocate to another country), then I would like to know. You are the first filipino to criticize me for getting involved with a filipina girl. By the way, I met Mikaela in a restaurant. It is not necessary to meet girls in bars or clubs. You can meet them in any mall or just walking down the street.
