Thanks to Mr. Bill Stroud and Mr. Will Prout I was fortunate enough to be invited to the 2008 International Cue Collectors Show in Kansas City, MO. This was my first show and it was truly amazing in many ways.

I arrived in Kansas City on Thursday and I had been invited to Will Prouts home for a get together he was hosting for the cue makers and collectors. Will is a very gracious host has a beautiful home and family. The guests wandered through the house looking at Will's stunning cue and car collection, talked with each other about cues and pool and generally had a fantastic time.

I was able to meet some of the biggest names in the cue industry and to a man everyone was very friendly and open. It just re-enforced my belief that the men who excel at the cue making craft are breed all their own. Unbelievably talented and humble at the same time. It was great to see that they all had a real passion not only for their craft but the game as well.

Hall of Famer Nick Varner was in attendance as well and it was my first time to meet this great Champion. In my opinion Nick is one of the best the game has to offer and he was very candid and open in talking about the state of the game today as well as sharing stories from his years on the road and the tournament trail. He even put together his wrapless Ginacue and played Dennis Searing a little one hole. Dennis fought hard but Nick managed to get there in the end :D

It was good to see friends and AZ members Jamie Wernsman, Stan Haines, and Jimmy Kissinger. One of my favorite cue makers and people in general, Andy Gilbert was in attendance along with his lovely wife Vicki. Andy was a hit at the show this year with his high end cues leaving many collectors talking about what they had in mind for him. It was a great day spent with some great people. I want to say thank you to Will Prout for the opportunity to experience something I will never forget.

The show itself was held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Kansas City, MO. It is an elegant hotel that was the perfect setting for a show of this caliber. Bill Stroud did an excellent job of herding together all of the cats that it takes to put an event like this on. Everything ran smooth and without a hitch which is a testament to the work and effort he put into it.

I could go on forever about the things I saw and did over the weekend but I will just let the pictures do the talking. One thing that really struck me was how nice and friendly EVERYONE was. It was a pleasure just to be among people with that much passion and commitment to cues and the game of pool. I highly recommend that anyone who has an interest in cues or the history of them attend next year in New Mexico.

Finally I want to thank Mr. Bill Stroud of Josswest Cues. Bill was the reason TAR was asked to broadcast the ICCS this year. He is and always has been a visionary in the industry and it was an honor to meet and work with him. Bill paid for the expense of trip out of his own pocket because he believes in what TAR can do and because he wants to grow the collecting world. Thank you Bill.

Two Paradise cues from Rick Goulden's collection. Notice the names on the foil. They say From: Frank Sinatra To: Deano Martin and the other one is to Dean Martin's son. Amazing pieces of history

Arthur Cue submission to the Royalty Collection. The country is Germany of course.

Mike Benders addition to the Royalty Collection. His country was Denmark so he went with a Hamlet theme. That is the "To be or not to be" speech scrimmed into the ivory.

The only one of these you will probably ever see. For more on this cue you have to ask Jimbo.

All I can say is WOW!!! Amazing cues!! I wonder what the value of his entire cue collection is? Probably more than I will make in a lifetime.

Thanks for posting these pictures. I was out of state with no internet connection during this show. Is there any way to purchase your coverage of the show? Did you record the show to video or dvd that can be bought or was it strickly a one time live event? Let me know.

Kevin

I'd also like to view the coverage. I tried to stay up - 2am here but couldn't. PPV works for me or donation or even free is good :-)

There are alot of collections there bigger than mine, i'm blessed and triple lucky to have what I do, to me its not a contest, I love to share my cues-I will go some year and take the Barry collection. I have according to Barry the largest collection of his work, and a nice collection of Gus player cues-no huge ones, someday. I havent bought any cues this year to speak of cause i lost my biz and its just not wise for me to buy anything now. I'm very happy with what I have. I do have ideas of what I want nd I would buy a few cues if they popped up. I love the Frank Sinatra?? or what ever they were in this thread, i'm too tired to remember right now. I like what I like not because its expensive. It sure is great to see everyone there having fun. I would be honored to host a cue show in Vegas(I have the right spot).

best regards to everyone!!

I certainly would love to see it also, looks like it was a great time. :)

pat yourself on the back 2 times-the pics worth gold

OK JCIN- what did you buy? atleast Tee shirts from all the cuemakers- You had to come away with something? This is what pool is all about (cue makers showing there wears) Great pictures thanks for sharing. I remember a trip to hawaii and I saw my first case with 4 szams, and a pair of Jw's, and Gus's Playing cue- Lucky offered 60,000. Brian always had another cue in the safe. I did get some posters of Luck's Szamboti collections -the powerhouse collections. Thanks for the great shots. I hope bill can continue to make cues. thank again mark

Ok now I have to call Rick..... He is a good friend of mine and he neglected to tell me he was going lol. I will probable see him this weekend at the hall and I can tell you he probably has close to the largest collection of anything pool related in the midwest. Now is all I need to do is win the lottery to buy a couple of these beauties lol. I am really upset that I couldnt go :(

Great report, Justin. And yes, I'm completely upset at myself for not going. This work $hit is getting to be really annoying.

And I'm impressed that Jim is able to check out a cue, drink two drinks from the same hand, all while captivating an absolutely stunning spinner.

Thanks for the great pictures! Would have been worth going just to see Will's Callaway Speedster! Wow!!!

All I can say is wow. Thanks for sharing with us JCIN this amazing experience you're had in KC. This thread I nominate for thread of the month award :)

Justin,

Thanks for all the very hard work you did at the show. The TAR involvement provided an added dimension to the show that is invaluable, and between you and Bill Stroud, I know it will be a mile more advanced for the show next year in Santa Fe. I have to tell everyone that you were personally outstanding in your work, both at my home and at the cue show. It is much more than just a willingness to work hard. It is the outstanding quality of your work and the outcomes that provide a lasting record of a "happening" that are so deeply appreciated by all.

The show was overall an outstanding success. The personal leadership and dedication by Bill Stroud (Josswest Cues) who planned, organized and brought the show to life is singularly the driving force that caused the show to be so successful. And it was a wonderful show.

The cues on exhibit ran the gamut from Martins, early Balabushkas, Gus Szambotis, fancy Palmers, etc., to ivory handled Shicks, ivory handled Ginacues, ivory handled Josswests, Arthur Cues with over 2800 inlays (Collectors Choice Award), etc. You get the picture.

Did I mention the Special Collection? Or Tony Martino`s Tuxedo Collection, his ivory chess set and unbelievable cue set to match, the annual Special Collection (this year had 11 cues in a set with European Royalty theme commissioned by Max Hoskins), etc.

Or the Grand Collection, with one cue placed in a special display by each cuemaker and displaying collector (over 30 stunning cues) where a Bob Manzino cue owned by AZ`s Ken Kerner (Highendcues) won the people`s Choice award.

Thanks again to Bill Stroud (The catalyst), the cuemakers, the displaying collectors (from all over the world), Justin and all the rest that made for a memorable weekend.

Justin, I know your streaming view of the show when you finish it in a couple of days will be very much appreciated.

Will Prout
